My brother was in the navy and he told me to hire a lawyer to go over the contract. But I think that's a little extreme

If I were going into the service I would absolutely have a lawyer look at it. Thats just me though. Selling your soul to the devil will be an ironclad contract. Its best to know what you giving up.
We are talking about war and becoming govt property. Not buying a car. Asking someone who knows about contracts etc is not extreme.
