Beat by a Saleen
A good friend of mine has a 98 mustang gt with a few mods, including a saleen supercharger, 3.55s intake, and exhaust. I finally got my Z broken in, so we met today for a run.
We didn't have a quarter mile marked off, so we agreed to run to 120. He got a jump from the start, and another jump on his one-two shift, and pulled away slowly. By 120mph he had 2.5 or 3 car lengths on me.
A couple things I noticed. One, the sound of the supercharger rocks! He just had it installed, and it makes a big difference in how it pulls. Two, his yoko A520s didn't bark near as much as my RE40s. I am happy with the Z's tires overall, but great for drag racing they ain't.
Overall, I am very happy with the Z's performance. I though it was going to be (more) embarassing. I have hopes of being able to hang with him with a few mods.
BTW, his car dynos at right around 300hp at the rear wheels.

This is the good friend with the 98 Saleen Blown Stang...My thoughts on the race...I am amazed that a N/A 6 cylinder can be competitive with a supercharged 8 cylinder. Without my power adder it would have been way too one sided in favor of the Z. That Z rocks. It sounds sweet going through the RPMS, it handles like a dream, and it has looks to kill. It's something when american V8s need blowers or Cubic Inches to stay with the import V6s. That Z is going to make me spends lots of money just to keep my edge. A thought that ran through my head while going down the highway at 130mph was...that damn Z just isnt going away...

Your buddy said you made 300rwhp!! You only make 260 and you still beat him!! that is barely more than they dyno stock, what the hell is wrong with your car are you running like 1 pound of bost or somthing!!! That is way to low even for a roots blower!!! I have heard of 98 GT's dynoing 280RWHP with just the motorsport blower at 6pnds!!! I heard the saleen blower is better, dude you need a tune!! And sorry to say but I barely call the 96-98 GT mustangs a american V8 they are so weak!!
96-98GTs dyno around 180-190hp stock...they only have 215-225hp at the crank...perhaps you have the 96-98 confused with 99+. The 99+ dyno around 230hp. 96-98 Supercharged Saleens only came with 305HP at the crank(I am running at 325HP at the crank and 372ft-lbs). The Cobras of those years dyno around 250hp at the wheels. Replace my automatic with a stick and I am around 276rwhp.
as far as the 281 vs the 302...HP and Torque numbers are similar...
90-95 302 205-225HP
96-98 281 215-225HP
90-95 302 270-300ft-lbs.
96-98 281 285-290ft-lbs.
(Cobras excluded)
This Board is not the place for such discussions...

No I am not confused, the 96-98 S-281 SC saleens came with a conservative 6 psi and ussually dyno around what you have 260. Now that is VERY conservative tuning considering saleen offers warranties and don't want to push it, the 99= with your mods typically should dyno around 330-350RWHP on 8 psi, The 96-98 should pull at least 280 with the blower only, if not there is a problem, my 98 GT dynoed 197RWHP, it had just a procharger at 8psi and full exhaust and it dynoed 326RWHP, you need a tune bad , or you are running 6 psi and should bump it to 8!!

Except they didn't exist. They had the S351... and the S281, but no S281 came from the factory supercharged.
Im around the 330 rwhp area

Why do you have to hassle the man? This just shows the difference between advertised HP and real world results. I know he picked up about 75rwhp from the supercharger, which seems like a decent amount. There are a lot of factors in the real world that can vary the amount from what the manufacturers get in ideal settings....
The whole setup on his stang was like $3200. If he was paying Nismo prices, maybe he should expect more.

360roush you are confused their were roots blowers on some 96-98 stangs, I guarantee it, if you need proof I can provide it, oh and I have a weird feeling that pistol pete and this mustang guy are the same person. Please don't flame me but i suspect it.

My buddy with the stang get an ID for this forum to make sure I wasn't making him look bad in my story of our race. I told him this was a pretty friendly forum, unlike many of the 'stang forums, then you go and make me look like a liar.
Next time, don't trust those wierd feelings you get.

I just wanted to say to the Z owners...I am sorry for turning your Z board into a mustang pissing contest. I'll be more careful in the future of my content when I post, and I hope others will do the same. I joined the board because I think the Z is a great car and wanted to learn more about it-not mustangs. Pistol Pete, thanks for the kudos and sticking up for me...you have a sweet ride.
