"Conditions" could allow a Z to be ahead of the 540i in the comparison buy 1-3 tenths and a couple of MPH simply based on what people have actually run in Zs. This fictional "internet race" could then have been swayed in the other direction with the Z ahead at 140mph. The fact is...a car could pull from another very slowly and easily be 2 seconds behind by 140mph....0-140 is a LONG race...

If we were talking about a quarter mile run a 2 second difference would be HUGE. but not in a 0-140mph run.
2 seconds is quite a few car lengths.....Even with poor conditions, a Z would be hard pressed to pick up 2 seconds. I would say that a Z and 540i would be neck and neck to 100 mph and then the BMW would slowly pull above that speed.

Even so, the 540i pulls some impressive times for a heavy luxury sedan.

Say whatever you want...but you haven't seen a 540 run a Z so you really have no idea how the race would turn out.

Looks like I'm going hunting for 540i's.....

Good luck...I hardly ever see 540is models much less a 6-spd, which is even more rare. Happy hunting!

The point is that the two cars were tested in different conditions, in different YEARS, and probably also in different magazines.

This is the true definition of "mag racing"

Until we get people with 6-speed Zs to run some 6-speed 540i's we won't know what the real outcome will be, so lets stop speculating based on ONE SET of mag numbers.
Thank you.... thats what I'm going to say!

THATS WAS A MAGAZINE NOT REAL LIFE, I don't believe that you are questioning a race that happen in the street because some magazine have different #'s.

Just to clear things up:

1) the race started at about 50mph more or less.

2) I don't know if it was a 6 spd but I'm pretty sure it was auto, it had Dinan accessories like exhaust, front lip spoiler, etc, and badges all over

3) for those of you who drive a Z, I urge you to race a 540, I think you will be amazed with your car, driven good it can be pretty fast!

4) my 350Z is not bone stock, it has Injen, ground kit and the pre silencer removed.

This was with a Touring model 350Z and a 540is 6-spd, tested on differing days of course. The auto in the 540is really saps the power over 75mph, resulting in a high 14's E.T. instead of 14 flat in the close ratio 6-spd of the sport 6-spd model. You ran an auto, a 6-spd would pull away from a stock Z equally driven, as the 130 and 140 mph times indicate, two seconds is a lot of distance at those speeds. The 540's are electronically limited to 155mph, although a Dinan chip can remove that limit.

I don't know what the weight differences are between Touring and other model Z's however, that could have made a difference as well.
Forgot about this thread for a while....

Anyway heres the 'but' factor. All BMWs have a speedo error of up to 10% built in (check various BMW forums and see for yourself - I just checked the M5 forums and BMW themselves have stated so).

If they simply took a stopwatch and watched the speedo hit 155 mph their ACTUAL speed would have been 140 mph not an actual 155 mph, thats why goverened Bimmers can have their speedos hit around 170 mph while their actual speed is the governed 155 mph. For those curious Nissan is one of the more accurate with regards to speedo calibration.
