Why do people say that cant beat an Camaro SS, but can beat a Z28?
Simple. The SS badge adds even more horsepower than a big red "R" sticker. 8*)
Just kidding......
Actually in most years the SS was faster than a plain Z-28 due to a better exhaust system and cold air intake. I think there were some other minor tweaks to.

Whats the difference between the two besides the looks. I know in my supra TT, I didn't have any trouble w/ any of the Z 28's, but for some reason the two SS I ran gave me trouble. It could of been the drivers. You don't see as many SS as you do the Z28s.

+-10 HP from a stock Z28...every LS1 car makes the about the same power.
SS are rated 325 and Z28 are rated 310, they both make somewhere in between at the wheels, but the SSs heavier weight usually gives up any advantages the ramair might have on the Z28, so usually they are the same. Although 1SC Z28s are known to be the fastest.
These are the ONLY differences between a standard Z28 and a standard SS. The SS has a fiberglass hood with quite possibly the worlds worst cold air induction design. They both have a 2.75 inch catback exhaust, the SS has a less restrictive muffler and different tips. The SS has a thicker front (32mm) sway bar and bigger (17x9) wheels and tires (275/40/17). It also has a slightly elevated rear spoiler, SS badges and year specific build number. It should handle better than a Z28 but for drag racing the Z28 should have an advantage. It's not uncommon to see a stock Z28 dyno higher than a stock SS.
When you buy an SS, you do have the option of an upgraded catback, suspension and for 2002, a better induction lid. Everything else you've heard belongs in fantasy land.

the main thing is that SS's are fully loaded, whereas you can get a Z28 with minimal options.
The faster F-body is a stripper model Z28...
There is an aura about the SS(the heritage, ram air hood
, wheels, and so on). I feel most people just dont know what exactly it is so they just think that the SS is bigger, badder, and faster than the Z28 when in most cases, its not. Another reason may be that the SS is an upgraded option on a Z28, making it better(faster). Just how I see things.
Bo
P.S. The WS-6 is the same way when in all actuallity, they arent any faster that the normal T/A's in most cases.

I debated between a regular TA and the WS6...the looks of the WS6 was worth it to me. 17" wheels instead of 16" is nice too...
we had a 99 z28, 6 spd , 410 gears, short throw shifter , full exhaust( with cats) and headers.. on drag radials my father would run 12.40's all day long, on et streets he has gone 12.20's@ 113 with a slipping clutch... oh yeah, that's with a race weight of 3600 pounds with him in it
keep in mind that this was a no option car and it still weighed 3380 without driver..

I don't say that. I can beat both of them.
Seriously though, here's my theory. Z28s are everywhere and any monkey will drive one (this is not to say that if you drive one you are a monkey) but there aren't many SS and those that own one usually know how to drive one.
Any LS1 is fast, but not so fast that one with a half-*** driver behind the wheel can't lose to a Z or some other "slower" vehicle.

Well, I think your exposure to the different f-cars depends on your locale. Around here, where just about everyone can get a GM discount, the SS and WS6 are much more common than the "lesser" Z28 and Formula.
Along with more people driving them around here are more people that know nothing about their cars. I get more SS owners looking down their noses at me than any other car drivers. I'm sure they sleep better at night knowing those 15 extra ponies that GM's marketing department gave their cars would just suck the paint off my lowly Z28.
I don't expect it's like this everywhere, but my point is that the differences between car and driver populations vary with location.
