Good chart. Gear for gear (i.e. 1vs1 2vs2 3vs3) the 350Z has more gearing advantage. Since you've got the numbers handy, can you make a chart that shows the data with regard to vehicle speed? For instance, how long (or fast) does the 350Z stay in first gear, how fast does it go in 2nd?

Would it also be possible to line them up like the 350Z's 1:1 gear vs the LS1 1:1 gear (1.6x vs 1.6x gears too)? (Maybe using 6-speed LS1 gears would line up better?? )

Good info.

I hope this helps.

The text file does not format well "in thread". I hope this helps everyone.

I hope this data is not used to turn "brother against brother" here on this thread. I saw a few earlier posts about wheel HP and wheel TQ and the advantage the LS1 has. It is SIGNIFICANT!

However, the 350Z gearing does help to ofset part (not all) of that advantage. When you look at the numbers to the pavement, the margins still seem to get thinner. Also, I think the 350Z can rev a little more (6600 RPM) in each gear. With the multiplication you can see that it helps a bit. I really think that this is where driver skill comes into play. If you know your shifts and know the competition, you can really level the playing field. But, there is no replacement for displacement. I would rather have the V8 for straightline acceleration.

Oh Well...no one said life was fair!

Peace to all you LS1 Mo Fos! (BD that's you.)

Oh yeah...moderator give me a red card if you like. I'll just jump to 350zmotoring. (BTW this all started with me posting a story that was true! The irony.)

Yeah, they are not to be fooled with. I'm not much of a racer anyhow. I don't care what the torque multiplication numbers say, I am not looking forward to a brutal "beat down" from an LS1.

However, I will run one...just for fun!

I think these have been some good posts....
the 350Z definitely has a gearing advantage over the LS1...of course i'm not sure there is a car made that doesn't have the gearing advantage on a LS1 car.

Aproximate speeds for my 6 speed
1st- 52mph
2-72mph
3-100mph
4- 128mph
5- 162 (speed limiter)
6- .5 overdrive.....don't think it'll do much more than 130
While the Z has better gearing and revs higher i think someone said the first gear on a Z goes to somthing like 35 mph meaning a LS1 car (6 spd) will still be pulling in gear for another 15 mph...
I think the Z can hang in the first part of a LS1 6 speeds 1st gear due to gearing but when the LS1 car doesn't shift is when i believe the pull starts and continues througout the gears.....i know when shifting into 3rd gear the REVS only drop to about 5K and 3rd pulls HAAARD and its right in the sweet spot.

Good info.

Thanks for the post on the 6-sp. I was waiting for one of those!

Like I said, I know who's a good match for my Z and who is not. I think the Z vs. M3 issue is a lot closer than the Z vs. LS1 issue. When you throw in weight and road conditions and differing driving conditions, almost anything can happen. But, it is still as game of odds. The Z is the underdog in both of those matchups.

Now bring on the curves on a "road course" and perhaps things may become a tad more interesting. I guess these last few posts prove that LS1 and 350Z guys CAN get along after all!

Agreed!

The Z28/Firebird at the top, I'm sure is no coincedence. I also find the Boxter S had the fastest lap time. Just goes to show, anyting can happen in any given race.

Remeber that in SCCA T2 competition, the LS1 f-body carries 150lbs. of ballast in either the front or rear passenger footwell and breathes through a restrictor plate with a single 47mm opening (the stock throttle body inlet is around 75mm in diameter). Imagine what the Z28/Formula/TA would do if they weren't being weighted down and choked!

Talking vettes vs 350z

I am a Z owner. Lets be realistic because I am a realistic type of guy. Vettes have more horse and more rwhp with not much more weight. However you'll be spending 10-25K more.
And lets face it.....vettes dont get the looks my Z does

Comfort, speed and most of all style
Thanks

Although 350Zs are eye catchers i would have to DISAGREE with you........when people see a vette they are like "whoa thats a vette".
Corvettes are VERY nice cars and are put together much better than the f-bodies as well as the IRS and great suspension.

Once again I still say when compared to anything short of a Lambo, Ferrari, or Porsche a Corvette is going to get the attention because people know what it is

That is due simply to the newness of the Z. If the Z does sell 30K units a year it will not get the looks that you so fondly talk about. Once the exclusivity is gone much of people's curiousity will dissappear as well. That is simply how the human brain works. BTW, both the C5 & Z33 are very well styled cars.

Yeah, the Z's gearing advantage pretty much evaporates after first gear. This is because we have to shift to second while the F-body is still in first. Then when the F-body finally goes to second, we are just about to go to third. And then it gets ugly. Ahh well, that's life. There's always somebody faster. Another thing is that it shows that in both cars, you should be shifting as close to fuel cutoff as possible.

Yup. These cars are starting to become common in my area (SE MI) and it's getting to the point that I can't leave the house without seeing at least one on the road. Believe it or not, the 4th gen f-body used to get the kind of attention the Z33 enjoys now. Just wait until a few years of 30K production puts over a hundred thousand of these things on the road.

Still nice cars, but I'd take a C5 (or C6) over a Z33 any day.
