a staggered setup would be a complete waste of time unless the tuner has a means to adjust VTC. Without that feature, you're best bet is a non staggered set.

The 272 is your best choice given your setup

Did you cc everything to see what final static compression checks in at?

because such is the nature of the VQ35 - it wants what it wants, and big staggered cams with aggressive duration on the intake side requires VTC tuning. Does it love a big intake cam? Sure - can you just drop it in, and expect the car to idle? Not by a long shot...VTC manipulation is needed, and that is why NISMO created the VTC pullies to begin with. They were made to go with their Spec 1, Spec 2 and Type A and B blanks). The 40 degrees of advance that the factory sprockets provide are good for a cam up the 270 ish range. Beyond that, to get the idle steady, and to provide as flat of a torque curve as possible, the larger sweep of the NISMO pullies (and a way to adjust them) would be needed. Even on a non staggered setup with Tomei 268-272, idle in no way resembles stock, and there is absolutely no hiding that the car has cams (unless you want to idle the car at 1100 - then I guess its fine). The 280 are even worse. With the VTC manipulation, you can make idle much smoother, and at the same time, make the torque come in earlier than by just letting the ecu run the show.

Doesn't that have to do more with intake duration period than whether or not the cams are staggered?

I am going to tune my car at UpRev since they can tune the VTC angles. When I do get my car tuned I am going to try to use the NISMO VTC angles for their 276 duration cams to see if its helps. The paper work that came with the cams shows some VTC angles but I can't read japanese so not sure at what rpm. Also you can forget a stock idle with the 272's. When my other motor was running with those cams it would not idle. Only at around 1000 rpm. It had a pretty nice sounding lope to it as well. It sounded very different.

Final compression ends up at 10.9

Motor is going in today...hopefully I can get some video posted tomorrow.

Got the car running today. The car won't hold idle...it needs around 1200 to 1500 rpm to idle. I will post some videos shortly.

Yes...I replied with some question about the oil change...wasn't sure what you meant about changing the oil immediately. The car hasn't been driven yet. We ran the motor for about 20 minutes off and on to try to get the air out and look for any leaks. We did blip the throttle and the revs went around 3500 rpm after we had been running it for awhile. Plan on doing a full break in to 1000 miles before tuning it on a dyno or doing in full throttle runs.

Notice how loud the car is just blipping the throttle to around 3500 rpm. Also you and hear a lopey sound holding the throttle at 1500 rpm.

Notice the tach jumping around. Trying to keep the revs steady at little over 1250. When I tried to hold the revs at anything below 1200 and the car would occasionally stall.

No exactly sure what rpm it will idle properly until I get it tuned. Actually today it was idling at 750 rpm with a big time lope. Yesterday we couldn't drop the revs below 1200 and it would stall. Not sure why today it was running at stock levels.
