DIY total N/A backyard build
Fantastic! I've been waiting for someone to build a normally aspirated beast with less expensive, quality parts. You truly are a pioneer. How do you plan on tuning it? I suggest an ECU reflash.

Its going to be ecu reflash. I am at a point in my life where I weigh the price of a haltech vs. how much track time it equals. So a uprev best guess reflash will probably be it. I would spend the money on a used utec bargain but no cam timing adjustment so screw it. I am all about the set it and forget it. I just put a brand new stock 84 month battery in the car after my pc680 bit it and I love it. 30lbs more weight but the car starts whenever I want and it fits the stock hold down perfect. I am being **** as can be with building this engine but I am just hoping it doesn't fail on me on start up. This coming week I will be taking more pics as it comes together, as all the really tedious work is done. Now its glue it and screw it time. I am already looking forward to building the motor I am taking out of the car, so if this things works out if will be for sale within a year. That or an E30 project, the z is a pig.

if by E30 you mean BMW , than i like !!! i love E30 BWM's ,especially E30 M3's
, wide body+24xx LBS =
p.s the Z is a "little heavy" but not compared to most cars today . but its a good platform and it can be striped to made into a great race car ! whatever makes you feel good .

Ok long block is done. I had to buy a heater, thermometer, and turn on the halogen lamps to high just to get my garage to 50 degrees so I could use rtv sealant. Now I have to pull the engine and swap everything over. That will start thursday. An uprev protuner just came available 80 miles from my house so custom reflash it is, unless the engine fails...How bout some pics

Great work - love the attention to detail. If you ever do decide to throw some FI on there I think this block will take it no problem at 11:1 compression. I didn't see moly lube everywhere? Looking forward to see how she does on the dyno. Best of luck on the start up. I think you'll do just fine with Osiris - will you be setting up maps for different octane fuels?

assembled with a lot of oil. when assembling short block poured oil into the galley and turned the crank by hand to make sure every rod and main was gettin oil. before i put it into the car i will fill it with oil and turn it over with the air gun and check oil flow to the heads and valve train. the valve covers are just sittin there to keep the dust out. its been bitter cold in nj. i just need 3 days around 40 degrees

The old engine is ready to be ripped out. Maybe I can get home early from work tomorrow or thursday sometime. Still have to switch everything over. I am torquing every bolt that has a spec, I don't want to fail do to lack of attention to detail. I don't know but if the newer hr is only for rwd I will imagine it is easier to work on. Maybe before to get to work next I will take a pic or two and showcase the chaos in my garage. A super find, I pulled of the stock cats which I half gutted and opened up. The one upper cat was gone, there is a cat in my nismo exhaust somewhere. It bent the O2 sensor on its way out.

Update its 2:15am and I just got in from the garage. New engine is in. I still have to hook up everything, but that doesn't take long. I have been slacking with the pictures but I have been just going out there and hammering away at this. I will take pics before and after the next time I go out...promise. Another DIY thread by rcmedix(i think thats the sn) had an awesome way of hoisting the engine by the four intake manifold bolts. I went out and bought 4 grade 8 bolts and it worked very well. I need a tilter for the hoist in the worst way. good night.
Nah I started in October, had to wait on the block machining and head work. Now the engine's all back together, sitting under the car, but the bung I had welded on the right exhaust manifold was at the wrong angle (I guessed) where the O2 sensor would hit the tranny. So I bought another manifold and should have the bung welded monday. Maybe next week...
1cockyZ, do you have an initial start-up procedure and specific method planned for seating the rings and breaking in the motor? If so, I'd love to hear it. My plan is basically to follow the advice in this thread: https://my350z.com/forum/engine-driv...ssion-182.html
But I'd like to hear your plans.

Just finished up the harness, accessories, heater hoses, and torqued all the bell housing bolts. Some before and after pics. The only thing left is intake and exhaust, maybe I should move this over to intake and exhaust now.
Mthreat to answer your question about start up procedure and break in.
Here goes
1. With the fuel pressure relieved and the fuel pump fuse out. Turn the car over until the gauge reads oil pressure.
2. put fuse back in and turn key and let it build fuel pressure
3. Start car and let it warm up, listen for bad noises and look for leaks
4. Add coolant as often as you can
5. When the fans kick on its hot and ready
6. rev car to 2k and hold for about 30 seconds
7. blip throttle bringing revs to 5k or so(this seats the rings and pushes anything through the oiling system)
8. after its has been running for 20-30 minutes and has been fully warmed up turn it off and change oil and filter.
Now for break in I just won't beat the crap out of it for about 800 miles and then its off to dyno tune. This is all if there are no bad noises, oil leaks are easy to fix in comparison.
after
before
idler eliminator spacer. the only reason for that idler was for crank driven fans. took nissan 4 years to ditch the idler
what a mess
next project

For anyone watching this thread. The car is now running. It started at the stroke of midnight. Although it did start before that but I shut it off as soon I heard it kick over. I was trying to prime the oil pump and pulled the wrong fuse and it started instead. I turned it off immediately. I assembled the engine with so much oil that none of the surfaces were dry. But anyway with the correct fuse out primed it up. Put the fuse back in and it started right up. No noise or leaks, but it only ran for a minute. Its 12am and I didn't want to **** off the neighbors. I will get up in the morning and go through the warm up cycle and then change the oil, so the car can sit in the garage cause its snowing. But pics and video tomorrow. 800 miles until dyno tune.
