Default Compression: Heads vs. Pistons

Does anyone know if there is a benifit or a difference in creating a higher compression ratio through a smaller combustion chamber or a taller piston. The reason why i came across this dilema is because the NISMO stage 2 heads run a smaller combustion chamber increasing compression to almost 12.0.

Smaller combustion chamber >>>>>>> taller piston dome. If the design is efficient (like the nismo heads) the tendency to knock will be decreased. VQ35DE's don't have a compact/efficient combustion chamber like the VQ30's or VQ35HR. The nismo heads are modeled after VQ30 combustion chambers.

I looked into the Nismo setup while researching my NA build. Ultimately the price over hp gain isn't likely to be good enough to other "cheaper" alternatives. But I'd love for someone to give it a try and prove me wrong.
