The issue is with P/N 13040-Z33002, the passenger side exhaust VTC cover and pulley.
There is a pin that holds the spring that advances/retards the camshaft. This pin failed, so the spring is less coiled and flexes independent of mechanical adjustment of camshaft timing. This explains the backfiring and overadvanced codes. Since the spring was so lax, it looks like it was also coming in contact with the timing chain, possibly explaining that chatter on cold starts. Pardon my "uhhs" as I am speaking about newly learned mechanisms.

While I'm in there with the timing chain and cover off, I'm tempted to change cams or add the Nismo High Declination VTC pulley, but I'm looking at 1k for the pulleys and 1k for the cams. Selling my C8Rs could offset most of the cams.

The problems with the Nismo pulleys is that I do not know if their degrees of adjustment is greater than the revups, although the regular DE is 40° of adjustment, compared to 55° for the aftermarket pulleys. Second, I do not know if the valves will be at risk of coming in contact with the pistons because I do not know what the clearances are and how to measure them without too much more labor. I wonder what IPP will know.
It would be great to have a flatter torque band and better low end drivability. I also wonder if idle could be lowered, or, if going to a bigger cam, maintained at ~900-1000rpm. JWT also has adjustable exhaust cam gears on which I'm not well-read, but curious about.

Also, picked up a hydroshield for my Injen CAI to make sure I never flirt with the danger of hydrolocking or throwing off AFRs.

Great to hear that your car is running well.
Not a full resolution to the P2A03 but I removed my secondary o2 sensors and disabled them thru osiris since i use those location for my wideband. For me, the code only occurs at the warm up stage of the vehicle so I am not concerned about them.
I like your list of mods and second the
-look into Nismo/Frontier FD
-bushings overhaul

Yeah, my passenger side intake camshaft failed. Tore it out, replaced the timing chain, tensioners, cam sensor. The chain still rattles on cold starts and when the timing chain cover was pulled off, it had been worn away from the chain whipping against it. I really wish there was a fix for that and wonder why it still does it with the new tensioners and chain.
I really want to understand why there's so much slack. I understand the tensioner need oil pressure and all that, but still. I wonder if cam timing in the low rpms affects it as it only seems to rattle when it hits 2-2.5k rpm during initial cold startup. I wonder if taking out overlap might change anything.
I'm not really well versed on the science, but curious to know other variables other than the understood and common explanations since replacing all those parts didn't really fix the rattle. I've tried heavier oils, too. Beefier chain? Tune? Recessing the timing cover where it comes in contact with it?

how the **** does a camshaft fail? what happened to it man?
did you mill the heads or block and add slack in the chain that way?
was the chain tight with no slack what so ever when you put it back together?
I remember when i put mine together, i was actually a little worried the chain was too tight. i remember as i rotated it by hand the tensioner put quite a bit of tension on the chain.
is your oil pressure good?

In no particular order:
-dowel pin for camshaft failed
-camshaft broke right at cam sprocket
-a link from one side of the timing chain was missing from it
-there were scrapes in two places on the timing chain cover
JWT said it was bad install, but I had 8k on the motor before this happened. IPP said it wasn't installed improperly. Vince didn't think it wouldve lasted that long with an improper install. Makes sense.
The car runs exactly like it did before, so I don't think there was any damage done. Prob needs a little partial throttle/low end tuning.
IPP decks the heads and blocks, so maybe a little too much was taken off. Could this be fixed by a thicker head gasket?

No idea. After it was fixed, no abnormal noises, solid idle, no consumption, good oil pressure. Raced an 09-11 911 C4(s) and pulled on it. Power to weight is similar or better if it was AWD. Is it a possibility the valves were just stuck open?
It was weird because when it failed, i had crap power until 3500rpm and then it drove nnormally. I got >25mpg for the 30 miles I drove home.

That doesnt make any sense, you seen the camshaft with your own eyes? Go play the lotto because your lucky as hell lol. If your valves were stuck open theyd smash the piston. Only way you can be saved is if everyone was stuck closed or very close to it which ive seen happen but very rare. Cool that it wasnt a catastrophe.

Picked up my car from JDS last weekend. Swapped in MicMicMotorBike's track diff setup. He still has some sweet parts for sale.

Cusco RS 1.5 way LSD with 75% lock up
4.08 gears
Nismo finned diff cover
White line diff bushings
Traction is awesome. The diff has made the car a much more efficient sprinter. Power is put down to the wheels and car just grips and goes. Gone is the wheel hop I had with the stock vlsd. With the gears and my 8k redline, the car is always at 4k and ready to rip to infinity. Does not seem the impact street use at all. The tires do chatter at low speeds during turns, but nothing unexpected and is not an issue in terms of drivability.
Can't wait to finally get this guy on a track. Thanks, JDS Motoring!

Next project: relieving crankcase pressure and a custom catch can setup. At the very least, I want to keep the engine clean, but there may bonus to what we have in mind.
On the horizon: Cosworth porting, GTR injectors and tune, seats, and perhaps a cage. I'd also love to get larger TB and intake setup if this thread ever gets moving:

There has to be a common link to all these camshaft failures. I don't know if its harmonics or not but you're one of about a dozen people I know that snapped a cam. Some did it with big valve springs and some did it on OEM springs and cams. A local G35 turbo guy snapped his cam in half like a toothpick a few weeks ago. There has to be something more to all this. Fontana did it on one of their NA motors as well IIRC
