Default New camshaft buckets...

I got some new ones in today and the tops of the are coated in a dull grey material...is this harmless parkerizing that will go away on it's own after initial startup, or does this need to be removed prior to installation? Thanks!

It's probably assembly oil... But, the grey part is throwing me off. Assembly oil is usually ultra viscous, like half way between oil and grease. I'm familiar with an ATF (bright red) colour to it so it would still be transparent. Grey doesn't sound quite right.

I ended up taking a brake clean soaked rag to them and with some elbow grease it all came off. This was definately not lube of any sort. If I had to compare it to anything, it was kind of like a harder version of what they use on the scratch off lottery tickets. I'm guessing it was a corrosion protection measure or some sort.

Man, I think that Nissan started using the HR's DLC coated buckets for replacement parts on all Z's. The DLC coating stands up to the higher revs and lift better than without it.

+1. I don't think it was a good idea to take the coating off.
