Default Just Purchased 350z Need Some Tech Help

Just joined the site looks great pleased to be part of the family now.

I just purchased a 350z 2005 model, its been looked after & only done 16,000miles...

I purchased the car with aftermarker Alloys and tyres already fitted but after driving now for 2 weeks I'm finding alot of rubbing on the rear tyres there touching the arche when goin round corners and large bumps in the road...

One thing I have noticed the rear left tyre is the worst for rubbing, when checking the gap between the tyre and the arch I could only fit 2 fingers in the gap but on the oppsit side I could fit 3 fingers.

Any one got any suggestions on whats up is it suspension problems or something more simple.

Any help would be excellent

The first thing I would look at is the fitment of the tires and wheels. Find these out for us and we can tell you if the application (Front/Back) is your problem:

1) Wheel size diameter and width.
2) Offset of the wheels.
3) The tire sizes you are running.

If you are running a good application then we may need to start looking at other things.

Also if your ride height in the rear is different between right and left you may have a bad suspension piece like a malfunctioning spring or mount.

I would just take them off and put on something that i liked. Probably would get new suspesion 2. Its easier IMO to just start from scratch.

265/35/zr18 is the tyre size... I'm going to take down to the garage tomorrow but just wondered if it was gonna be an expensive job...

The wheels are brand new the old owner only fitted them 4 months ago, so changing them would be a wasit of money...

As for changing the suspension this is an option but on an 05 model i cant see why it would need it, unless the old owner had been going over speed bumps at 60 mph or flying off bridges or something

So you have 265/35/zr18 all around? That should clear. Do you know the offset of the wheels? If they are too aggressive that may be your problem also. Is the car dropped? If so how much? Once again if your ride height is uneven then you either have spring issue or a broken suspension part.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I have the same problem and there was never a resolution posted.

My left rear is rubbing the arch but the right seems fine. I can easily get two fingers between the tyre and arch on the right but can't do the same on the left.

Left - Eagle F1 - P285/35ZR19 90YY
Right - Potenza - P285/35RF19 99W

The previous owner clearly wasn't bothered by buying matching tyres and I want to get this sorted. How do I find out what the offset is?

I've measured the drop from the arch to the rim and the left side is half an inch shorter than the right. Does that indicate a problem with the springs?

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your purchase. Have you checked to see if the spring is correctly mounted in the spring bucket??

not yet, I'll have a look around and see if I can find a photo of what it's supposed to look like?

Couple of shots of the right hand side - this side is ok.

These are from the left hand side - that's making the noise.

They look the same to me but I'm not 100% certain what I'm looking for tbh.

I just measured the distance from the top of the spring to the bucket and the left side is 1/2" shorter.

Went to Firestone today as one of the tyres was leaking through the sidewall. kept pumping it up but it was going down slowly over the next 48hrs.

The guys there said a bit of beading would fix it and for $40 i figured that was a bargain but alas it was not to be the tyre spade went straight though the wall! So I now have two brand new bridgestones on the rear setting me back $400

On the upside however the guy at Firestone suggested a narrower tyre as the ones on the car sat very wide and sure enough a 275/35/19 and it's no longer rubbing!

So that's positive at least. I just need to sort out the miss-fire issue now - The previous owner thought it was an injector issue so maybe some cleaning agents in the fuel will be my next step.

Cheers for all your help!

Well, if it were me I wouldn't stop at the tires man, you said you measured a 1/2" difference, something doesn't sound right there to me.

I would figure it out, maybe it is just a shock.

A performance car is expensive when it needs some tlc but worth it if you want to maintain the integrity of the car and keep it performing and keep it safe.
If in your case you need a set of shocks, thats not even that bad plus you know it is good to go and your starting off with god parts.

I wouldnt skimp on this kind of thing, figure out why it is off and fix it.

Just my 2 cents do what you will.

Haven't forgotten about it but I have a few other bits that need attention first. The mechanic had a look and recommended changing the shocks as well as that's probably whats causing the difference in height.

On my list of things to do thanks for the input.

good luck with yours man, let us know when you do change the shocks and if that was the issue to help share it with others who might come across this issue later on.
