Default HP chips for the 350Z.

I just got a 350Z, real nice, Grand Touring and all that good stuff. I want to start doing work to the engine, cold air intake, exhaust, headers, etc. However, I currently found out about an electronic chip that is supposed to add like 35-50HP. I want to know from anyone if it's as easy as it sounds, and if you would recommend it. I was thinking about it only because to increase my HP 35-50 in engine work would cost thousands of dollars, while this chip is like 100 bucks. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Those chips are a scam. Also, be careful what intake you get. The design on the stock CAI is very good. As far as aftermarket intakes, not many yield a gain, but actually a loss. A lot of people go with the pop charger, which can gain you +/- 6hp, but heat soak can be an issue.

I think the chip is an SLR chip. As for the intake, I was thinking the Nismo dual intake. It says it adds like 8HP. Also, I love cars, but know jack crap, which is why I joined the forum. This way people who know their stuff can guide me. Thanks.

dont get that chip!! chip should be your last mod followed by a dyno and tune. expect to be investing big bucks on the z cause no parts are cheap. done a lot of work on mine for very little performance gain. if u really want power, install a turbo. otherwise it would cost about the same to keep it naturally aspirated totally bolted on but way less power

When people get the Z... do they fail to realize that parts and insurance for it are expensive?

Don't buy cheap sh*t that doesn't work...

In the world of the Z... you have to pay to play. Cheap horsepower doesn't exist here.

Welcome to the forum. Pics of car?

Bumpinjeep, I got a 2008.
As for not wanting to spend big bucks, that is not quite what I wanted to say. I am willing to spend a lot of money on my Z, I merely wanted to see what the chip was all about and if it was as good as it sounded, that was all. Like i said, I know very little about cars, and that is why i joined the forum, to make sure I don't make mistakes on my car, and from the feedback I am getting, I know a little more about what I am doing. So no chip. Got it.

take a look at my signature to get an idea of some parts if you want to keep the car non turbo. my goal was to mod the car as far as can afford keeping it naturally aspirated. happy with how everything came together. its been a 3 yr project thus far and only thing looking to still do engine wise is a $1000 chip with tune and dyno. the car gets daily compliments on its sound but personally think it barks louder than it bites. raced a modded cobra yesterday but he pulled ahead a car length before hitting third.

08, nice! Yes you should see that gain with the Nismo dual intake. A couple ideas to make more power. A plenum spacer, and a TD exhaust would be complimentary to the intake your considering. Even then, you will probably be looking at an added 30 hp(ish) depending on the what you pick out.

, nismo intakes add 0 horsepower sorry to say, and theres no plenum spacers available for the HR. To gain 30hp on an HR, you need every bolt-on available plus an ECU reflash.

Thumbs up Straight Bull

Dont waste your money on the SLR joint. It's not even a chip, It controls the air flow and attaches to the Air fliter wires. I have seen no difference in horse power what so ever. But I do have to say that I have seen a differnce in gas consumption. That is the only reason I did not send that junk back, gas is crusial in da ATL right now! This Z owner is suppose to be hooking me up with some one who knows how to adjust the settings on the factory chip. He claims that the guy makes the shift points better and takes off all factory limits. So the car is like an over seas version with no governor. And he says it does not affect the factory warranty, so of course I am trying to find this guy. Will let you know when I find him how it went!

No worries man, we'll all been there at one point. 99% of the "chips" you see out there advertising these big gains are pure BS. A "chip" should be used as a tuning device after your major modifications have been done, at that point a chip would be benificial. Unfortunately the Z doesn't respond really well to bolt-on mods, you'll have to spend a bit of money to get some decent power out of it.
