I am welding the differential on my 350z to drift in some events, however i need it to be a daily driver too, is a welded differential too much to drive with ?

 

why not just swap the parts out for a base rear? and sell the diff? and dont plenty of people drift with a diff? be prepared to get ragged man, their rough around here. hope u searched. never head of doing this before. on a 240sx? yes

 

it will be noisy, it will eat up your tires. for a dd and you saying that your going to drift in some events i don't think you should.
if you cant afford a real lsd, just buy a diff on the side and have that welded. so when you go to the events just swap the whole pumpkin out.

PS: don't let anyone tell you that welded diffs don't hold out on a z, or there is a reason you don't see to many of them on a z. it all depends on the quality of the welds. the only reason you don't see them in z as much as in 240's is because z drivers tend to have a little more money to save for a real lsd

But honestly a Welded Diff does not eat tires as bad as people say they do.
5k on my pirelli p-zero, and not one sign of wear from the diff. Slight camber wear from bad alignment

Its noisy only on slow speed turns, as the tires wanna fight eachother all the time and wanna grip.

I daily drive the differential and have a stock open diff for a spare (suppose to swap it in after events, but gotten used to DD on the welded, and just to lazy.)

The diff is full locked 24/7 so if you drive like a jerk, it will break loose. (better learn how to control your car....)

Just make sure the differential is welded correctly. Ask whoever's going to weld it, what technique they use and make sure a legit welder is used.

My differential was welded at Performance Options in Oakland, Ca. He took 3 hours to do it, i didnt mind as i know the whole cooling and heating process that is needed for legit welds and for proper penetration, and he used a steel plate to lock the gears.

More power to you if you get it, It's not bad at all for DDing, just takes time to get used to, and just dont drive like a jerk and you will be fine!!

 

I take offense to that 240 statement but my 450hp all motor ls2 s14 did just fine event after event.

I've drifted cars with welded diffs. It's f*king sick. I like it. I just would not like to deal with it daily. Once I get going on my track 240 it will be welded

 

just get a 2 way LSD

 

+1 that's what I have in my car right now, locks hard and is not to noisy at all

 

welding a diff on a daily is possible but might not be practical, because of the amount of noise and you'll eat through tires like crazy.

 

I drive my Z most of the time with welded diff, I have a base and had my friend who's a long time fabricator weld it and help install 4.08 gears. We took everything apart and cleaned it in a parts cleaner then welded and let cool down all the way. Just make sure the person welding knows what there doing and should be fine, I have some pictures of how we did mine ill try and find later.
It's done fine for the past 3 events no problems.

It's funny my past 2 240s had legit 2 way diffs and my Z is welded, I feel the welded makes less noise than 2 way because all you get is tires squeeling a little when making tight turns while 2 way would be clunking and chattering. They feel the exact same drifting on and you only have to change the oil on a welded... well once or whenever you feel like it. Is say go for it.

had a welded on my s13 back in the day.

its not as bad as people say it is.

as long as you dont drift every corner your tires wont worn down as quickly as it may sound.

only thing i didnt like was chirping tires at low speed turns in parking lots occasionally.

would i get one for my Z? no. but if it's cost effective to you then do it.
