J&S Safegaurd and Nitrous? Thoughts?
Im thinking about using the J&S to retard the timing when i spray. the thing is does it only kick in after 5250 RPM? since i being to spray at 3600 and stop at 6100 wouldnt i need it to retard the timing for just that window? would i be able to run a 100 shot with this safegaurd retarding the timing? all input is appreciated
P.S. would this safe gaurd + 100octane = safe 150hp shot?? thanks!

X - I haven't worked my way up to 100 hp jets but I'm @ 75 hp PLUS the aggressive T/S reflash for N/A cars & I haven't grenaded the motor yet!
I've got the J&S set up to pull 10 degrees of timing whenever the knock sensors detect detonation. After four 10# bottles I've seen the J&S status light come on several times but nothing's shown up on the plugs nor have I heard any knocking so I'm fairly comfortable that the Safeguard's soing its' job.
I'm running 93 octane but if U haven't reflashed your ECU with a more aggressive timing map, I'd feel comfortable with an occassional 150 hp shot using 100 octane but I think that's probably pushing the stock internals.
. I plan on working my way up to 100 hp jetting in the near future ( along with new rear tires!!
) then after installing my Vortech I'll need to restructure the whole system.
I haven't seen anything about the J&S only operating above 5250 rpms.
. As I said, I've seen the active status light come on well below that as I have my NX Maximizer starting my spray @ 1500 rpms in all 5 gears ( I have an A/T ). IMHO ( & with years of nitrous use ), @ 150 hp your concern is not only timing but structural integrity of the motor. I know that some of our members have gone up to 125 hp jetting but can't recall their names. Perhaps they'll chime in here. Good luck!!

X - TechnoSquare's gonna tell ya that about all they can do for U is reflash your ECU to raise the rev limiter to 7100 rpms & allow the throttle body to open 100%. They won't flash in their fuel & ignition maps ( or at least they would advise against it as they did me ) because they add so much timing that even the smallest shot ( 55 hp ) of nitrous can cause knocking. I think this is the L-spec reflash. That's the reason that I went with the J&S. It allows me to keep the aggressive reflash T/S has for a naturally aspirated car but will handle timing issues should they arise when I spray. I run on the motor 95% of the time & quite frankly, it's a dog w/o the N/A reflash!
The reflash really allowed all the N/A mods I've done to be maximized because the 'butt dyno" told me that the G felt slower & less responsive after I did my intake & exhaust mods but before the reflash.
The Safeguard is a passive system; that is, it's on all the time since it's wired into a 12v constant feed. That way U don't have to worry about forgetting to turn it on - it's on duty 24/7/365. That'll also cover a bad load of gas or any other scenario that is ignition-critical.
If U're serious about running the nitrous long term, I'd suggest looking into the NX Maximizer. It's a multi-purpose piece of electronics that will allow U to fine tune your nitrous system to your situation. It's expensive but replaces several individual mods ( window switch, etc ) that might cause your total financial outlay to be the same. I think mrtomcat is selling his so u might look into the classifieds. Good luck!

Yea i already have the window switch and the TPS is built into the Zex unit, but im thinking about it, i think firt im going to get the J&S safegaurd, so im assuming they fixed the problem with burning up the coil packs?
X - I bought Gurgen's old Safeguard which had already been upgraded for our coil packs. I had been talking with another Member about purchasing his used J&S so Gurgen advised me to call J&S & talk with John ( the owner ) to make sure that the one I was looking into had the modification ( this was before I knew G-man was selling his ). When G decided his new motor had too much piston slap ( that was fooling the J&S
), he sold me his.

I'll warn ya that John ISN'T the best at responding quickly but I think it's because his business is a one-man operation ( albeit with an EXCELLENT product, IMHO ).
Since U already have a window switch, U'll have to decide if the Maximizer's other features make it worth the price. For me, it's a no-brainer as the ability of the NX piece to fine tune the nitrous injection is outstanding!
In fact, it possibly saved me a motor yesterday. I thought I could shift fast enough in manual mode to beat the rev limiter ( I have an A/T ) - WRONG!!
The motor flashed to 7500 rpms
but the AEM went to 14:1 so the Maximizer S/D the nitrous. Not sure if that was because of the AFR circuitry or the rpm circuitry but in any event, the nitrous quit spraying before the VQ bounced off the rev limiter ( which would have been ugly
). I was also blowing the tires away in first & second gears so I went back & reprogrammed things to bring the nitrous in on a slower ramp speed & at a smaller % in those gears. I had stepped up to 100 hp jetting so the settings I had been using for the 75 hp jets didn't work - DUH!!
. Remember that I'm an engin-nerd
so I live for this kinda stuff!!
Again, good luck with your nitrous system!!
