Oki, so I can gather a few things from this incredibley informative post.

1. UTEC is a great way to go for engine management, as it seems to handle multiple applications - ie Nitrous, FI, N/A. =)

2. I can safely run a 100 shot before I look into doing any internal upgrades. (Which Im sure would be plenty for me.)

3. Im going to have a long drive in the Z from Iowa to get Jeremy to set up my NO system. ;-P

Just as an aside, has anyone else here run their system using a J&S Safeguard as an alternative to the UTEC? I have one along with the Zex TPS and the Zex window switch, and they all work great together. Beyond that, it also proactively retards timing per cylinder as needed, up to 20'. To me, this makes it better, at least for a nitrous system than the UTEC, since it has that extra safety built in.

the price on the JnS plus window switch plus tps switch totals to more than the utec. the utec is plug and play so no cutting any wires at all. maybe they will add a progressive control to the switch and make it even better...


my car will be done in less than two weeks

If I am at the track, is it possible to turn off the bottle and run stock and then turn on to see the difference in qarter mile times or is nitrous always on?

Also is the install and uninstall pretty easy to do?

How long does it take the bottle heater to work?

That's a good point.........I just prefer the extra safety that the J&S will give you by actively pulling timing should it be needed, whereas the UTEC doesn't offer that flexibility. And I didn't mind paying the small difference for it. OF course, I have no intention of going FI, so that was also a factor in my choice. And the other stuff works flawlessly with it.

Couldnt find any info on it so....

Was wondering if getting a 3.9 Final Drive would help with a nitrous setup...probly wouldn't spray in the first or second, but what about after that???

well sir, the utec actually has a knock control as well, adjustable 0-100 % in every 1000 rpms you use. it is very sensitive and works perfectly. plus lets you take out timing out of your nitrous map for added safety, plus controls your rpm window plus controls the TPS it kicks on with...

all for under 900 dollars if you look at the right place.

plus has a switch to flip between 5 presets maps while you are driving..

3.9 setup will make ANY setup faster running through the gears, BUT you will have more traction issues so people chose not to do it, idealy you would want 3.9 with tons of traction on these cars for the fastest times...

Well then, it really is a nice piece, and it does do one thing I currently can't do that I really need - switch between maps when I turn on the spray. I heard this can be done with a tune with multiple maps that can be switched via the cruise control, but it sounds expensive. So I guess a UTEC is in the cards at some point in the future......Thanks for the info.

The pins to tap on the ecu are as follows:

Pin 52 - TPS #1
Pin 60 - cylinder #1 (for RPM signal)


Is this accurate for an 05'; I picked up on a rumor that the pin positions were different on some years.......

Default Zex - fuel Pressure switch?

So I got the 125 pills and wideband 02 sensor for my Zex kit and wanted to know where I should install the 02 sensor. I guess I wanted to know what my a/f ratios are.....what numbers should I be looking for? Assuming my car's setup is running the right numbers, will I then need a tune? Or should I get one anyway?

A question for those with nitrous. Do you guys typically spray through all your gears? Or just the higher ones?ie: 3rd and up?

I typically spray only in second gear. This minimizes traction issues. I use a Zex Window Switch lockout, and acitvate the nitrous after 3300pm, and switch off at 6200. Activating at 3300 keeps the engine in one piece......

This thread has alot of useful info. All I need to look for now is part #'s for spark plugs and what size gaps I need on the sparks plugs.

I plan on hooking up my zex kit next week. If anybody comes by any info like torque specs for the spark plugs and gap sizes please post them here for future reference. My search function doesnt work at work....

One more thing....would upgrading the fuel injectors be a good thing or bad thing if I were to run 75 shot.

I'm not sure that's needed for such a small shot. Anyway, I would think your car would run rich whenever the car was off the spray if you did that......
