Exclamation Spraying in 5th and 6th..

Whats up guys. I have been contemplating getting nitrous for the Z for a while now. I like racing 1/4, but I also love racing at higher speeds on the highway. My question is, how many of you spray in 5th or even 6th? How often do you do it, and how fast where you going when you stopped spraying? I know it is recomended not to spray in overdrive or higher speeds because its a strain on the motor, but I want feedback from those that have done it. I like N20, I think when done correctly its a safe, reliable, and cheap way to add power, I just dont like the idea that if I want to blow away an E46 M3 on the highway I cant do it say above 140...any feedback would be good, thanks.

well, i know it is a totally different animal, but sprayin in 5th on my '00 si was frowned upon. your last gear is goin to b a weak, highway gear. it could definitely cause some harm. i know of some fi cars that have blown out trannies highway runnin, too.

I know your motor is under the load from the dyno, but you where missing the most important part on that dyno...the wind resistance at 154mph....anybody else have anything to say about this.

I spray (100 shot) up to 6th gear (150mph) a few times now and the car pulls very hard... if you have a bottle heater you may feel the shot more like it is at that speed (for example 100 shot)... I said this because the more time you keep spraying more cold the bottle its gonna be, and the mix is gonna be more rich at the end... that means that the shot is not gonna put the same WHP that have for example on 4th gear...

Hope this help!

i drive an auto, so i only have 5 gears. but when i was fine tuning my kit late last summer, all i was able to do (safely) was freeway tests in 4th (mostly) and 5th gear (2-3 times). (dyno coming this march)

i can see how spraying in high gears would put stress on the tranny specially with air drag, but isnt it supposed to be able to handle upto a certain amount of hp anyway? i think a 100 shot of nitrous should be within the limits of what the tranny can handle including air drag, but then again thats me. our car is shaped nicely to help reduce air drag.

anyway, i didnt have a problem spraying on the freeway at least up to 125mph. havent driven the car faster then that yet with or without n2o. sad i know. but it got up to that speed pretty fast on n2o.

another thing, don't spray for long periods of time. i tried not to spray more than 10 seconds at a time. the longer u stay on it, the hotter your engine gets. this obviously increases the chances of damagin your vq. i wouldn't see a problem winding out 4th then 5th on the highway though; the juice should get u through those 2 pretty quick.

well 10 seconds might be a lil short as us drag people need it for at least 12 I can see your point about the tranny but what about a TT or SC car? They wont be able to hit WOT while in 5 th or 6th? This theory doesnt sound right to me. As long as your not running a 300 shot or something...

About the heat issue what can we do to prevent our cars from getting hot? What exactly gets hot when u spray?

well, i wouldn't start sprayin until after your 1st to 2nd shift, if u're not runnin radials or slicks. u'll destroy street tires tryin that. shift to 2nd, flip the switch, and finish the 1/4 mile; no problems there.

your head is what gets the hottest; that's where the fuel is burnt. that's why u should check your spark plugs often. there isn't a lot u can do to prevent high temps; just like i said, only spray sparingly. u can build your engine up to withstand more heat to a point, but obviously that'll cost some money.

wot in 5th is fine, but i would stay away from doin it all the time. i would not do it at all in 6th; what's the point. 6th is not designed as an acceleration gear.

I spray up to 5th starting in 2nd when I street race... personaly I think is safe if you have at least 2 step colder spark plugs to burn all the combustion inside the chamber!
