The (stressful) jump to the dark side.
I have been planning on going F/I on my beast from the time I ordered it 26 months ago. Many things have changed in the time, financially for the better, and I find myself 2-3 weeks from ordering the Vortech SC for my 2006 Revup. I have read many horror stories of F/I headachs and plan to keep things as tame and safe as possible (for a SC anyways). I have owned several turbocharged cars (rx-7's and 300zx's) and know how bad and how good it can be. The Vortech blowers have been failing at a high rate recently and Vortech addressed the issue on November 29th with a statement.

This worries me as it appears the effected units were not pulled from vendors, rather they were given longer warrenties. I don't want to buy a potentially defective piece of %&^, I just want something that will work correctly. The issue isn't having a backup vehile, because I bought my RX-7 just to be a backup vehicle. I just want to spend my time driving and enjoying my Z rather than wrenching on it all the time.
I can't believe I am second guessing this at this point. I begin to wonder if a N/A Z, heavly modded, would keep me happy. I know it would be virtually problem free in comparison to the F/I Z, which is great, but I have motor oil for blood and I fear that I will aways crave more power.

maybe NA + nitrous?!?! (many guys run a 100 shot w/out problems)
Nitrous is something I have never seriously considered for the Z. Not a bad thing to throw in the mix of ideas.
Another member sent be a PM as he is in the same boat I am. He is suggesting that I look into the STS turbo kit. That is what he is going with. Anyone local have that kit?

i knew a kid in AZ that had that installed recently... he was running like 7psi... i know they had an issue with boost lag, yet it still gave a pretty good gain.... ill try to find the link about it and throw it up here in a lil bit

I read about the STS kits awhile ago...seemed interesting, but I wasn't 100% convinced when they said that there was 0 turbo lag (I could see that for a small turbo and light boost...). But it's got to be a much easier install than fitting everything under the hood!

the turbo kits leave alot more room for modifying or turning up boost in the future. in responce to your statement "i have motor oil for blood", the superchargers are limited in power output and the want to go faster is ALWAYS there. i started with a procharger and only took about 4-5 months to go built motor and twins. now, i am adding nitrous to it, lol.
maybe even a used turbo kit (if your comfident everything is there) is the way to go if budget is a concern.

I would stay far away from the STS kits. Hope you do make the decision to go FI, regardless of whichever kit you choose. Go ride in any local guy's "heavily modified" N/A car, and then go ride in one of the local FI Z's. Makes the decision easy.

Vortech Kit- limited with potential power, not as much torque as a turbo, finicky with belt adjustments, they have had problems with berrings (now addressed), and sounds broken at idle.
STS Kit - Is turbo lag the big down side with this? I don't know.
Other kits - are not Rev-up specific, require modification to the steering rack and are alot more expensive. I want to buy something that is a complete kit, not something that is designed for the 03-05's and requires custom modification.
Suggestions?
Checkout this looong thread here, especially the later pages. Terrible service, and quite a few issues. Fuck that.

Is there any other option for me than the Vortech Kit that doesn't requires some custom fab work?
Any suggestions on which route to go?
correct me if im wrong but i heard word of an HKS sc.... dont know anything about it... dont know anybody that has had it... but ill look into it a little bit while im bored at work today
As of now, there's the Vortech and the Procharger. It's obvious what my preference was, for various reasons. The new HKS system should be very nice. IIRC it's a bit more expensive though, but prob worth it for the exclusivity and the Japanese engineering.

I bought a kit that is on it's way. I will document my experience with the STS kit in a fresh thread.
