Can you elaborate on the horror stories thing?

i ran that for a couple months, you just look weird at stop lights. and what kinda excuse do you got for a cop if he asks you why you got them on? lol "officer i wasn't racing... im just wearing racing harnesses"

Unless I'm missing something why would it be illegal on the street. Isn't a harness MORE secure than seatbelts????

in the event of a rollover your body cannot slide out of the way--as it can with a 3 pt Factory harness.

how often do you roll a z on the street when not racing? and if racing, wouldnt you choose the racing harness over the 3pt anyway?

Sorry Guys, trolling the NorCal threads as I just started working in Napa for the next couple of months.

Most harnesses are not street legal for the above mentioned reasons. BUT there are some that are in fact DOT approved. These belts must have a CLEARLY visible central unlock button and have some kind of expansion area at one shoulder point to allow a person to 'slide' in the event of an accident. I am not sure on the details of why that is necessary, but I put in Schroth Racing harnesses and they say if you run them on the streets, you need to order that special single point push button release for the Paramedics and fire rescue personnel.

Here is their website and some quick rundowns of the technology used for the DOT harnesses.
http://www.schrothracing.com/main/Engineering

So the short answer is YES it can be street legal, but you MUST buy a DOT approved harness.

Good luck. and I hope you don't mind me poking my nose in your region. ;-)

harnesses period should not be used without a roll cage, whether or not they are street legal.
