oh i forgot to tell you chris, when you drove by my houes the other day, all the middle school kids was like "whoa, did you see that car? it had RACING SEATS AND HARNESS!!! WOOOO" lol

Sorry Guys, trolling the NorCal threads as I just started working in Napa for the next couple of months.
Most harnesses are not street legal for the above mentioned reasons. BUT there are some that are in fact DOT approved. These belts must have a CLEARLY visible central unlock button and have some kind of expansion area at one shoulder point to allow a person to 'slide' in the event of an accident. I am not sure on the details of why that is necessary, but I put in Schroth Racing harnesses and they say if you run them on the streets, you need to order that special single point push button release for the Paramedics and fire rescue personnel.
Here is their website and some quick rundowns of the technology used for the DOT harnesses.

So the short answer is YES it can be street legal, but you MUST buy a DOT approved harness.
