What is meant by the term glass? Are we talking about add'l lenses? What about the 30D? Is it an upgraded 20D or is it something I should avoid? I seem to be able to find more places selling the 30D and the XTi than the 20D.

30D is the replacement for the 20D (upgrade).
If you are just starting, I really don't see why you are looking for a 30D/20D. The XTi will do more than what you need, why spend an extra $500-$600 for some additional features that you might not even use at this moment? I would say use that money to get yourself a kick-*** lens.

Yes, it means lenses. Better lenses are a good thing, but it can come at a high cost. Honestly, there are many $200-$300 lenses that are very good. They are more than adequate for someone just starting out, as someone just getting into it most likely won't have a huge need for a faster lens, or one slightly sharper than another. Read the reviews of the lenses, and ask questions before you buy.

Don't get me wrong, there *is* absolute crap out there, and I'm not recommending you cheap out and get the least expensive no-name garbage, just that you probably don't need the more expensive line. Some people dismiss the lower lines, asuming they are garbage when in fact they hold up very well against lenses costing much more.

Also, don't dismiss used equipment. I shot professionally for many years with a mixture of new and used gear (when the lenses cost over $3,500 new, you tend to look for some bargins). You'll be fine with a camera body that someone used a few times, but do stay away from the junk (crappy bodies, lenses, flashes, etc.)

As with most things, there's often no right or wrong camera or lens for everyone. We need to know your needs (what you'll be using it for, etc.) to be able to offer you the most appropriate suggestions. When you are just starting out, a photography class will suggest you get a completely manual camera so that you have to make a choice (forced to make a choice if you will) about the settings and learn and understand how to control the camera to achieve the result you want.

Well, just picked up the XTi (400D). Now I need to decide on a lens or two. I want a fisheye and maybe a telephoto. What do you all recommend for that and where are the best places for deals on these??

Paid $899 for it. Just got it from Circuit City.

I don't mind buying from Ebay, but I need an idea of what to look for. I hear the Sigma ones are good, just don't know what size would be best. Fisheye, I'm looking at their 15mm one.

I'd say I need to keep around 400 or less each.

There's a group buy going on for the Peleng 8mm fish eye lens. Great lens and lots of fun.

Thanks for the link. I just made the 25th deadline. Can't beat that price as long as it is a quality piece.
