I have about $400 to spend on a camera. Over the last few months i have grown more and more interested in photgraphy due to some of the great pics posted in the media share section. I was wondering what would be a nice basic but good quality camera to buy to start taking some good pics. I want it to be digital because i will do some editing on the computer.

any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Try looking into the Canon XT? It's a little more than what you want to spend, but it's worth a shot.

i have a kodak z650, and love it...takes awesome pics too

 

Kodak Z760 here. Only 6.1 mp tho. Takes very clear pics.
I messed around a lot with the shutter settings, etc.

 

6.1 is still alot...the larger # MP, are only good for huge pics i believe, but even 5 MP is clear for a standard 8 by 11 pic, or whatever

does yours have x10 zoom?

mine has 10X...i was sitting in center field in miami, and took this pic, and they were all the way across the stadium

Size was downsized a lot, hence quality sufferings

I've been in the market for a camera too, less expensive than what you are looking to pick up. I have found this site to be very helpful in doing my research, but some of the pics posted here are awesome.

If you want to make a jump up in pic quality, you might consider a digital SLR. The optics on these are a major improvement to the compact styles. Price will be a factor, but good deals and service can be found at bhphoto.com and adorama.com

with $400 i would get a digital SLR. you'll probably have to spend a tad bit more, but the quality that it produces will make up for it. the new canon xti might be far out of the $400+some price range, so maybe go with the older canon XT or the nikon D40

 

I second the canon recommendation. My uncle's a pro photography and canons are the only digi cameras he uses. Although they're all out of my price range, unfortunately...
