I've spent about $200 so far to build the rig. I'm going to build another one that clamps under the car. This particular rig mounts on top of the car with suction cups.

This is the view with the camera mounted on the rig.

BTW, what suction cups are you using? and how much do they go for?
I spent $106 for two. I've got about $135 in other materials for this rig as well. I didn't need to spend quite that much, but I'm a poor planner.
I also just ordered three industrial magnets that I'll use to build a different kind of under car rig so I can shoot higher angle shots.

you should be using the magnets. the suction cups should only be used for shots like:
where there is practically no distance from the camera and the car. with the suctions cups and the long arm, that 5 pound weight of the camera will turn into what feels like 20-30 pounds quickly, and can deform the surface of the car.
and turning the car off is the best. get it moving, coast it in neutral, and use a remote if you can. will give you the best outcome.

I just need to find the time now to do it!
