Default Exhaust Pre-Silencer Cut-out in Scottsdale

To all my Phx. friends:

I had my pre-silencer cut out and it was the best $20 I EVER spent. The car sounds great and has more power. I went to Midas off of 90th St. just north of the 101.

Highly recommend you do the same.

Would love to meet some of you, let me know if you want to help organize a 350Z meet. PIR maybe?

I seen you turn off Frank Lloyd Wright into I think it was Raintrain? the other night.
Unless there is 2 black Zs with 20" wheels
It looks great man, I got whip lash from turning my head 180 degress as you turned and we drove past.

The mod sounds like a great one to do (no pun intended).

Default Z meet

The Desert Z Assoc. meets this Wed. nite at the Nissan dealer @ 70 st. and McDowell. I'll be there and possibly 2 other 350's as well. The other "Z's" number about 15 to 30 or more on a Wed. nite. Come on out, I have a modified exhaust on my 350 and we'll compare exhaust notes with Ted's 350 that has the B&B headers on! Regards, Jim

hmmm I cut mine off last week and within 1 hour I welded it back on... sounded to high pitched and "tinny" for my tastes.

Default Thanks for the replys

Nice to hear from you guys. As far as the Wed meet goes, I can't make it due to a softball meeting.

I really would like to get a few 350's together for a little fun. I read a post on this site about a guy doing a video shoot at a closed down airport, now that could be fun!!

The pre silencer thing is an acquired taste I guess, but to me it sounds like a Ferrari or something. No matter what we do we can never make a V6 sound like a V8 though.

Let me know what you guys think.

I'm gonna remove my pre-silencer too. Most people I've heard from on this forum have said the "tinny" sound goes away once the exhaust warms up. If it sounds like a Ferrari afterwards, hmmm, let's see, how can I say this, that would be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!!! But it's all about taste. I live way out west near Luke, so 90st street is quite a trip, but I'm going to the pavillions this Saturday. Maybe I'll see some of my fellow Z owners there, nah...I know they'll be there showing off their sweet thangs.

Default Out near Luke

I am far west too, near T-Bird and 107ave. I am headed to the Desert Z meeting tonight @ 70 st and McDowell (Scottsdale Nissan) for the 7pm meeting. Wanna' caravan over? I'm trying to get more 350's to show up. Presently, I think we have 3 350's that will be there tonight along w/maybe 25+ other Z cars. Regards, Jim

I wish I could but, I work mid-shift so I have to be at work by 10:30 p.m. and I haven't went to sleep yet. But if you're going to the pavillions this weekend we can caravan together. Sound good? Anybody else?

Default Pavilions

Good idea on the caravaning to Pavilions. Last time it was a nasty, cold and windy day and we only had two 350's out, (my LS and a DB) but they garnered an awful lot of attention! Let me know what your schedule is for going out. Regards, Jim

Default Hey Richard

I talked to you at the Pavillions on Saturday. Well, I had my presilencer removed at a Midas near me. They tried to charge me $50 for about 10 min of work. I haggled them down to $40 but still felt jipped. Anyway, it sounds better now...more throaty once it's warm, but at high rpm's I still get this sort of fizzing sound. I'm actually thinking about taking the whole muffler off (that thing is huge and ugly sticking out from the bottom of my car like that)and seeing what that sounds like. I'm positive that would lessen the backpressure and free up some hp. With the two catalytic converters still in place, I'm hoping it won't be all that loud and maybe that will eliminate that fizzing sound all together. Only one way to find out I guess .

Joe, I changed out my muffler for a Flowmaster from Midas and it sounds terrific to me. The one thing you won't like when you remove the stock unit is that the exhaust pipe now shows hanging down and it's ugly. The stock muffler hides it. The Flowmaster tucks completely up out of sight and it definately shows the pipe hanging down. The one fix I used was to spray the entire area, (pipe, differential housing, suspension parts, etc) with High temp black paint. It is not nearly as obvious now.
Here is the view before and after paint. Still, with certain lighting, even w/black paint, the pipe is very obvious to the following car, but oh it sounds good!
After paint Regards, Jim

Default Muffler Replacement

My guy over at Midas tried to sell me a muffler that is supposedly used by Nascar, I can't remember the name of it. Does anyone know about it? I liked the idea because it is the same shape as the stock muffler.

If not how much did the flowmaster set you back?

Default Jim,

Looks like you did a real good job painting, it's hard to see the piping and stuff under there. Anyway you can get an audio clip of that flowmaster on here?

Joe, Saturday we will be running a couple of 350's out to Canyon Lake for some video and stills and perhaps we can get something then. BTW, would you be interested in bringing your Z and coming with us? Jim

I'd like to go, but I already have a tee time on Saturday and I don't want to ditch my golfing buddies...plus I have to get into their wallets again . Thanks for the invite though, maybe next time.
