Default Accident Rant and Repair Question

Well this morning on the way to work, someone in a Suburban really liked the lane I was in and she decided to get a little bit too close. Actually we were both turning on a double turn from Ward Road to 64th ave, I was on the outside turn lane and she was on the inside turn lane. When we got the green arrow she didn’t know that it was a double turn, or didn’t see me, or whatever, but ended up coming into my lane. I usually make my left turns pretty wide, especially when I have the outside turn like in this situation. Right when we got on to 64th is when she collided with me. She simply crossed over to my lane rather than going in the left lane and got me. I think that she would have kept me there if I didn’t stop and let her by. She also said that she didn’t know I was there even when she was bumping into me, she just noticed some resistance.

She did pull over and first thing she said was “I had the right away, I had the green arrow”. I told her that I had the green arrow too and it was a double turn, she just went into the wrong lane. She was pretty nice after she figured out it was her fault. She thought I was coming the other way onto 64th. I told her that we needed to call the cops and do a report. I guess that I didn’t care since I wasn’t at fault. The police showed up and we filed the report at the police station. No tickets were given at the scene or the police station.

She didn’t have any damage that I could see. It looks like the only thing that touched my car was her front tire. On my car I have the black rub marks and probably scratches from my drivers side door to about the front wheel. My wheel has some scratch marks too. There are dents and deformation along that area. The bottom skirt and door look off, but I need to take a better look at it.

So now that the report is filed and the insurance companies are notified, do I need to do anything else? I’m going to her insurances company’s (Gieco) claims adjuster tomorrow morning. It’s a shop on Evans called Global, I don’t have to get it repaired there though.

Any suggestions on repair shops?

Do you have suggestions on how to get it repaired? I was thinking that there are minor dents and scratches that may or may not to repairable. I would rather have new panels. Is that even an option? And after that, what about paint matching?

It wasn’t really a hard hit, but is there anything I should worry about? The mirror folded in when she hit me and when I shut the door it seems to rattle a bit more than usual. I don’t want any extra rattles or what not afterwards.

Also what about resale now. Will a report show up somewhere that this car was involved in an accident since I did a report with the police or insurance company?

I’ll post some pictures when I get home.

Thanks,
David

Wow, David that sucks. I have nightmares of soccermoms in Suburbans running into me and being oblivious of it. Sorry it turned out to be reality for you. I am glad the damage is negligable. It sounds like if you weren't on guard, it would have been worse. I can tell you thhat it will show on a Carfax report, as the police will have the VIN on their report, as well as the claims agency for GEICO. I am surprised she did not get a careless driving ticket. As far as shops, I don't know in the Denver area, but when it comes to the repairs they will most likely be authorized to only work your door panels and fenders' dents out- not replace them. You might be able to pay the difference, but either way you wil have to make sure the shop is reputable for a good paint match and blend. I don't know if Don would recommend the place he went to, but they seemed to do a very good job with the paint. Good luck,
Will

Thanks guys. Yes I agree it could have been worse. When it was happening, I was hearing crunching sounds and all I could see out the side window was my mirror poping back the back side of the Suburban. I was expecting a lot worse.

I just heard back from Geico. They said that they take care of the cost after I get take it to the claims adjuster. So I guess that's the good news. I was looking at it closer and really noticed the dents, that's the bad news. But in general not too bad, my arms and legs still work so no complaints. (Just whining)

Yeah those are the Evo side markers. I've had them for a while, I like them. I thought they looked like the plastic shower curtain rings when I first got them. And I thought there was no way that the double sided 3m tape will hold them. But after the "polishing" job by the Surburban's tire, they obviously hold pretty damn well. The Z emblem actually have some scratches on them, but they're still one there.

Sorry to hear about your accident. I had a similar incident a few months back making a double left from eastbound Alameda onto Kalamath St. This time a tourist in an Focus tried to make a U-turn from the outside turn lane! I was in the inside lane and got on the Brembos HARD. Gave her a long blast from the euro horns at the same time and she froze for an instant. Then she recognized that it was ACTUALLY a double turn lane and didn't have the right of way in any case. Not so much as a wave to apologize... some people's kids!

In any case, I'd recommend you try Master Collison Inc. for your Z's repair. They did a great job on my C3500 Crewcab Dually and have a lot of high-end automotive body experience. Ask for Will at (303) 934-4080 and tell him I expect them to treat you right!

David,
Let me recommend the shop I have used many times. The name is "Ralph's Specialty Shop" Custom Paint and Design. His number is 303 424-1706. Address: 6000 W.55th Place, Arvada. He's done my car several times and is a wizard at matching paint. It's a one man shop and the guy is a perfectionist. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference in paint when he's done.
Sorry to hear of your mishap. That is a situation I dread every day when I turn from Sheridan to 80th Ave. There is no good place to be and people are such irresponsible, morons that can't make a turn in one lane to save their lives. It really makes me miss my truck.
I'll just add a little rant of my own to yours. I know your frustation. Good luck on the repair.

Cool thanks again guys. Well I got the claims adjustment estimate this morning and I was given the repair total to be $2000. I will check out the two shops that Dave and Craig listed. I think that it would be good to get a few estimates.

The work and replacement parts that they listed were the fixing the dent on the fender, replacing the panel for the door, and repainting the side. They also added in the work for removing and reinstalling the side glass, headlight, bumpers, etc when they paint it.

The Geico claims office is at the Global Collision shop. They said that they do work for Ferrari of Denver. They showed me a F430 that they just finished doing a $60K repair on. It still had dealer tags.

I think that when I check with the other two shops I’ll see how much extra it would be to fix a small door ding and the nasty scratch on the rear bumper when the garage jumped in front of me when I was reversing.

Thanks again,
David

David, sorry about all this mess, but luckily it wasn't worse.

I know everyone has an opinion on where to go, so I will give you mine as I have used them twice myself. Once for my Z, which had like damage to your issue, and for my wifes car. My buddy who owns TC's performance takes all his cars and his customers cars there now as well.

The place is Concours Cars of Denver, I don't have the phone number right now as I am on vacation, but if you need it I will get it. I know it's in the phone book. Ask for Jason Ford, tell him Brian Mudd sent you, he knows me well. This is a small family owned shop, but they do do all the speacialty imports and high end luxury cars which is there bread and butter.

Heres what they will do. they will want you to bring the car to them with the repair estimate. They will do there own estimate and compare to the one you have. If you want them to do repairs they will schedule you in, if not you can think about it. If they do the work, they will do what they feel is nessessary to get the car fixed right, if it is more then your original estimate they will work with the insurance company to get paid for the rest. Trust me when I say they fix it how you want it fixed, they have your best interest in mind. I have never had any issues with any work I have seen them do, and I know quite a few others who have been there now.

As for the other issues, it will show up on a carfax report, but unless you are selling the car it shouldn't even be a worry. It's still your car and it's worth a million dollars to you I'm sure regardless. Don't worry, these places will get it fixed and in a couple of months you will have forgotten all about it.

Craig: Thanks for the info on Ralf's shop. I went in there on Friday. He seems that he has a pretty good shop and that he can do the work just fine. He was telling me about your streak of repairs there, sorry to hear about all of them.

Brian: Thanks also. I have an appointment with them on Tuesday. I'll let you know how it goes.

Justin: Aurgh that sucks. I actually was thinking if I was hit in the front or the rear = new bumper. Having to repair the door really doesn't get me anything new because it was fine to begin with. Oh well. Best of luck on your accident.

Gesh... I am really sorry about your accident David. I know exactly how you feel, but you really don't have much to worry about with CARFAX or other reports that would have a diminished value for your resale.

Best of luck, life, and love in the New Year.

Don...
