240SX monster build! (Update: Motor In!)
At the end of last summer I had the oil seals on my turbo blow out and promply burn off 3 qts. of oil. The car had not burned a drop previously so I never checked it, but missing 75% of the oil is no good and I spun a bearing and got rod knock. So I parked it and decided to do a full build and shoot for this spring as a back on the road date. I am shooting for an uncorrected 400 to the wheels on pump. This is not a drag car but a road race/street car so response is more important than ultimate power.
Here is the original motor, still need to pull it, but it is disconnected. Final motor will use this motors head and the new ones bottom end.
I bought another motor that had not had rod knock and was in what seemed to be good shape to rebuild the bottom end. This will all get hot-tanked, bored and honed .20" over, crank will be balanced and lightened. Here are pics of that teardown.
On the stand, head off.
You can still see the cross-hatching on the cylinder walls, a good sign.
A view underside.
Rods and pistons out, they look pretty good for an old motor, not signs of detonation of excessive wear.
Journals look good.
My stack of goodies!
Arias .20" over 8.8 CR pistons.
K1 Technologies rods, forged then magnafluxed and shotpeened. They are the lightest available and still good for 650 hp.
They make such a nice pair.....
Extra tranny, just incase......well you know.

This is a KA24DE build, that gear is a transfer gear, there are two chains one comes off of the crank and goes to that geared pulley then another chain goes off of that to the cams in the head. The head is off so you do not see the other gears or chain, but you can see the sprockets for it on that pulley.

I dreamed of Turboing my KA for about 3 years, but bought my Z instead. Alot of people try to steer you towards an SR (nothing against SRs), but Ive seen KAs makin plenty of power. Congrats!

I've got an SR in my garage right now that one buddy blew a hole in. Rod went right through the side. I swapped another SR in for him back in August. Now my other friend has a S13 and his KA finally gave up after 220,xxx miles. So, we just pulled it out before Christmas and now we're putting in the rebuilt KA this Monday. He thought about going with the SR, but after seeing Blake's at a dyno day he figured he'd just boost the KA. So, I'm sending him this link so he can follow along with your build, Blake. He's going to run stock for a few more months as he saves up enough for a turbo kit. Light boost, nothing as severe as you're doing. But it's good to see guys making power with the KA. Although yours looks more like the KA block used in the Frontier than the 240Sx. At least my buddy's S13 has the distributor right on the side of the head and not at an angle like yours. Maybe they changed later on or something? Looking good though, I'm sure you'll hit your power goal. What turbo are you using. Please tell me you're not using the old Mitsu that came with your Greddy kit. There are so many better, more responsive turbos out there. Have you looked at Turbonetics new GT-K line?

I am completely torn on what turbo to go with. I love the GT30R for my power goals and it is super tempting but it also costs $1200 so..... I am thinking I may just do a Garrett T3/T04E 57trim .82A/R for $615 and be done. I will look into those Turbonetics turbos.
No clue what you are talking about with the distributor though, it is where they all are on the S chassis.

how is the power curve? Only reason i'd ever go for an sr20det is the amazing power curve they put out. flat torque from 4k to 8.5k is pretty nice.
I dont know how a KA dyno looks like.
Damn i want a 240 ><

KA power curve is much better than the SR power curve in my opinion. The only benefit to the SR is slightly higher stock redline. I was only revving mine to around 6500rpms stock, the new one will have a 7200 RPM redline, which is on par with the SR.
Here is my cars best dyno, this is kinda typical of what this motor does. The problem here is that I had a 450+ hp turbo on a 280 hp setup so I lost spool potential.
This is closer to what I plan on hitting this go round, as you can see I am expecting the same powerband but with an extra 100+ horsepower.

Internals: 1700
Machining: 600
Rebuild tools: 200
Manifold: 800
Turbo: 650
Wastegate: 275
Clutch: 425
Oil Lines: 100
Injectors: 350
New ECU: 675
New MAF: 150
Extras: ?
I have an Excel spreadsheet that has it all and it is right around $5500 including new HIDs, Painting some body stuff( ), and some wheel repair. Although the ECU, Injectors and MAF are not on there due to me already having them.

The Garrett T3/T04s are not bad, they are a quality turbo that in E trim is very close to the GT series as far as the wheels go they just lack the ball bearing center section.
