Default How fast through Kansas, etc?

So per another thread I'm heading back to Atlanta from Denver in a few weeks. I'll be heading east through Kansas and I'm wondering if anyone here has made that drive semi-recently? My real question is how fast do you think I can safely push it to make good time but not get into real trouble (speeding ticket or worse). I have the new top of the line Passport radar detector with GPS so I'm hoping that'll keep me pretty safe...

90 in a 75?
95 in a 75?
80 in a 75? :-(

Thanks,

Ross

95 will certainly get you a ticket. Ever since I take 80 east, I've had it with the communists in Kansas.

I hear that they are not very lenient in the midwest.

80 you will most likely be fine... you might get pulled over and given a warning.... 85 and you might get a ticket, 84 and you'll most likely be fine, but if you get a cop for a small town that is bored you're gunna get pulled over and given a talking to.

I'd suggest 80 because the cops pulling you over to give you a warning will take longer than you just driving 80 the whole time. FYI I've only seen 1 person get pulled over for 80 and given a warning.

first of all, the speed limit in kansas is 70, not 75, so revise your ratios downward. i'd guess you're safe up to 80. you can see forever in the daytime, but just watch the cops coming up from your rear (unless you've got a valentine). they have marked and unmarked Z28s over there still.

watch it between salina and manhattan. also, a little past manhattan (eastbound) there's some local sheriffs that hang out on the interstate.

remember, I70 is a meth pipeline and sometimes they'll go hunting out there, just like the CSP does--drive about 67 in the right lane, bunch everybody up, then pull over who they want to for following too closely. if you look like a tweaker, it might be you.

Glad I asked, guess I won't push it too hard, don't want to go fast then get a ticket to slow me down (and hurt my pocket book!).

Thanks guys, I'll let everyone know how it went when I get back...

one thing that's odd about the kansas state trooper vehicles is that they're all different colors--silver, white, black. so, you can't see a silver crown vic and just discount it because you think the cars are all white.

they also have chargers, too.

When I drive cross country (typically east from Colorado, but sometimes heading west, to) I always stay in the 8-9 MPH over the speed limit range. I've never been pulled over for going 9 MPH over the speedlimit. I've had some state patrolman glare at me as I creep past them with my crusie control set at 8MPH over -- and even follow me for a few miles, looking like they were trying to intimidate me -- but I've never been pulled over at anything less than 10MPH over the speed limit on an Interstate.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Looks like I'll be doing around 80, damn, was hoping for a little faster than that. Maybe I can find a vet or similar to tail about about a 1/4 mile - let him be my warning!

90 in 70 will get you at least a $160 ticket

Im gonna back up funky on that one, ive done it twice, if its in the day you can push it a little just keeping an eye out since kansas does have air support, they are pretty strick and i only went about 9 over till i got close to CO since it goes up at the line. Its a boring state to drive across so set the cruise and take a nap, since its one long line of highway (well dont really go to sleep). Just be careful and drive safe. You need to push it, dont keep it down, do it in spurts, let someone play rabbit for you and let them get about a half mile in front of you to shake out any hidden cops. You come up to a curve or the road goes over some blind hills, expect to see something, they sit behind overpasses.

I'm a traveling salesman and travel I-70 all the time. As stated above the speed limit in Kansas and Missouri is 70. I typically drive 7-9 mph over the speed in the right lane-using the left lane for passing only. You draw a lot less attention that way!
I-70 across Missouri is a different matter. There is a lot of 18 wheeler traffic between Kansas City and St. Louis. Those truckers can really screw traffic up by taking miles to pass in the left lane going about 1 m.p.h. faster than the truck they're passing. Just keep your cool.

I drove from NC to Denver TWICE over the summer of '04. Lots and lots of state troopers in KS (almost 90% of cops I saw during the 1,800 mile trip were there, actually). I went 9 over the whole way and never had a problem.

I forgot to mention, as posted earlier, Kansas HP drives Dodge Chargers, Crown Vics, and I've seen some undercover SUV's all in various colors.

Yes, that's a very good point to make. When he says various colors, he means all of them. Red, blue, green, black, white, you name it, they have it.

With all the cops there it amazes me how I managed 140mph through half that state without getting caught... D:

Does that mean you got caught halfway through, ya pussied out halfway through, or you only started your crazy run when you were halfway through the state??

Enquiring minds want to know!

I live 13 miles from the Kansas border on the Colorado side and have to go into Kansas fairly frequently. About the fastest you can drive is MAYBE 79, if you are lucky...those State Troopers are like vultures.
Remington

EDIT
In Goodland, 13 miles from the state line in Kansas, there are about 15-20 State Troopers stationed there with every make and model of vehicle you can think of.

I got stopped for 7 over one morning
