Question Smog Check in CA

I recently had the Nismo S-Tune Exhaust and R-Tune CAI installed on my Z and would like to continue with some Nismo Headers and maybe Crawford High-flow Cats. HOWEVER, I know that the cats sometimes do not pass smog checks. I am wondering if anyone with this set up or something like it has had a problem passing their smog check with their Z? If that's the case then i'd rather wait until I smog check my car and then install the cats.

I did some research and came across this link:

http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/ftp/pdff...smog_check.pdf

I have an 03' Track and the table suggests that I don't need to get smog checks at all? Am I interpreting that correctly or am I way off? Any input is greatly appreciated...

I'm hoping you don't have to smog. I'm at work right now so I can't verify by reading carefully.

http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/StdPage....ck/doineed.htm

http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermk...es/amquery.php

http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/ZIPAREA/ziplookup.aspx

But if you do need to smog, first you have to make sure it doesn't set off the check engine light. Also having a hot lapped car heats up the cat and makes it more effective. I'm not sure if Nismo products have a Carb number.

I hope that helps.

According to the chart, your car does not need a smog check for the first 4 years. The only way to be sure is to wait for your registration to see if there is a 'smog certificate required' notice on it.

Thanks to both of you guys for the info. I think i'll play it safe and not get the cats until I receive my notice from the DMV. Although according to that chart I SHOULDN'T have to get a smog check this year. It would just be a pain to have to take the cats off and then install them again after my car passes inspection. Have you guys gotten a smog check for your Z? Have you had any problems?

I know what you mean, but from what I understand those are getting harder to find. The state is really cracking down on the people running those places. Not that I would reject any sort of information you might want to send my way... *wink*wink*

I don't think you will pass the visual even if you can pass the acutal smog test. When I had my M3 smogged after I sold it, the smog guy look inside and underneath the car with a flash light. The good thing is that as of 1/2005, I think we don't need to smog newer cars for 6 years. This is from an excerpt from one of the above links:

"Beginning January 1, 2005, vehicles 6 or less model-years old will be exempt from the biennial Smog Check inspection requirement. For vehicles with registration renewals due in the 2005 calendar year, this exemption includes model-years 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. "

That's just what I needed to know. Thanks for the info. Looks like i'm getting some Crawford Hi Flow Cats soon! I was going to wait until after July (when I have to renew my registration) cause I didn't want to hassle with putting my stock ones back on for the visual but this obviously changes everything.
