So far I've had:

1st oil change: Mobil1 5w30
2nd oil change: Mobil1 5w30
3rd oil change: Royal Purple 5w30
4th oil change: Amsoil 5w30
Current: Mobil1 5w30

Here's a link to a website I found a while back that did 'real life testing' of synthetic oils:

GReddy 5-30, love it for the color and it's true synthetic!

It's not a problem anymore, at least not with PENNZOIL (could be that those cars had problems regardless of oil type)

but I can tell you first hand.. pennzoil is totally fine nowadays. Maybe it had problems in the past, but not now.

I have been using Pennzoil in all my cars for 25 years, changing oil at 5K mi intervals. Never had any problems.

Realistically, I do not think there is a great difference between oil brands that are used for everyday driving, as long as you use reputable brands that are API certified (and have correct SAE viscosity rating for your driving conditions) and follow regular and reasonable oil change intervals. It is more a matter of personal preference.

Well, its said that the oil you use should be approved and API certified.

The vehicles we saw with the sludge were pretty top notch vehicles, Lexus LS400, Acura Legends, and a few infiniti's. But I guess they fixed the problem in the past few years because I haven't heard anything negative.

There never was a problem with Pennzoil. Pennzoil has been API certified for many, many years. The likely issues were with the faulty engine design on the above cars you have mentioned, and not with the oil that was used.

...or maybe the owners were driving 10K+ miles between oil changes.
