i was at the scene from 11-12:30 or so waiting for the coroner to arrive, i heard that the driver of the CL was still in the car dead for almost 2 hrs. It looked very bad, no way the driver of the CL survived. the cl was on top of the SUV, i wish i had my camera with me, you cant describe the scene of the accident with words.

The film isn't to blame, but you can't argue that it has influenced a boom in the street racing culture. Street racing has been around for years, but it was more limited to sports cars, which were owned by a more mature/older group that could afford them and had more experience on the street.
Now the big thing among even the youngest drivers is talking about street racing, modifying the car they've been driving for less than a year or two.
I've been guilty of street racing before, but 10 years of experience driving has taught me when to back off, when to hit those brakes, when to avoid the risk vs. rush.
Thats why i'm also against $20k entry level production race cars like the Neon SRT4 which are marketed towards younger demographics. A lot of kids are going to end up killing themselves, and others and it'll only slow down when its brought to the public eye.

It seems like there have been a LOT of streetracing deaths lately -- or maybe the media is just making it SEEM like that. I don't know stats - does anybody?
I just remember that one "shark attack" summer where it seemed like Florida, etc., were getting a ton of shark attacks (like when that boy had his arm torn off and his uncle saved him or something like that).
Anyway, the media finally admitted that if you looked at stats, that summer had about an average # of shark attacks - it was just that the media was focusing on it more and highlighting the number of occurrences.
But unfortunately I have to agree with zxsaint - while 1) the media is probably over-focusing on street racing casualties, 2) the fact that a street racing movie w/Tyrese and hot girls came out probably did encourage kids to drive faster. I mean, it's not very difficult to do. Like w/ doing drugs (just picking an example, don't flame me), you have to find them somewhere and pay for them somehow - but with driving, you just have to have a car and press down on the gas pedal.

After what happened last night i bet la county will try to change the laws of street racing again like they always do. It like a never ending cycle. I also doubt it will accomplish anything.
While i was at the scene last night i overheard a guy talking to one of the officers. The guy said that people that have fast cars like that should register like sex offenders (register their cars as a race car in their city). It was total BS coming from his mouth. Like zxsaint said when production cars like the neon for under 20g, younger drivers that have them will push it to the limits. As time goes by cars will only get faster.

I gotta chime in here. Cause I have strong feelings about things like this. Fast and the Furious was a RESULT of the street racing scene, it did not CREATE the street racing scene. Street racing now is in serious decline actually, especially in southern CA. Cops are busting people, and all the spots that used to be popular "tracks" are no longer used because cops have busted them so many times. I know people who were big into street racing in San Diego, and they've said the scene is all but dead now.
And ZX, kids ricing up their honda civics and racing is quite old. Kids were doing that when I was in high school 8 years ago when F&F wasn't even a glimmer in some producer's eye. Kids have always, and will always do stupid things in cars.
And Iris, yes, media definitely blows things up. Like all the missing children too. Children being kidnapped is no more frequent than it ever has been (in fact, numbers are down), but the media decides to start covering these things, and makes them seem way more prevalent than they actually are. Mass hysteria.

It's just yellow journalism, the writer needs to come up with a common enemy. It's those damn kids, their rap music and racing movies. Typical crap that journalists have been spewing out for years, I don't know why everyone is so surprised.
Anytime there's a good antagonist ie... 2f2f, all journalists have to have their little slice of the pie and this unfortunate wreck was Mr. Ryan Oliver's slice. Maybe he got a promotion out of it, that would be swell.

I was a cinema major at USC and we had lots of conversations about movies influencing people. Its all BS. With regard to 2 Fast 2 Furious causing these recent accidents, I would like to point out that this film was a sequel, so why didn't we hear about how the original caused all kinds of street racing deaths? Another point is that if people imitate films/TV then why don't we hear about any of the good things that people imitate, only the negative things that may have some loose conection to a film or show. Man I hate how sensationalist the news/media has become.
