West Co Nissan 370z Test Drive
I went in for an oil change on Tuesday and also to test drive the new 370, they had a blue one in the front that just came back from another test drive; I asked to test drive a manual, the saleman walked me to the back lot to a silver one.
First impression was an so so, clutch is too soft (more driver friendly
), engagement is lower then I had thought, and the euro style floored mounted gas pedal is just plain weird to me.
We pulled into a gas station to fill up and the salesman didn't know much of anything about the Z, let alone cars in general. I asked him about the LSD, his reply, "HIDs are standard for the headlights, the rears are LSDs like the previous model." I held my laughter
. We got to a straight and he told me to push it, the new 3.7 didn't 'FEEL' that much faster to me, (maybe because the car only had 10 miles on it, not broken in yet?).
Just wanted to share my experience with you all, maybe some of you can relate and share your experiences here also.

Unfortunately no, the model I drove was a base, I didn't know this at first, I had initially thought that all 370s came with this Synchro-Rev-Match. Apparently it is only available on a higher trim level, activated through a
S-MODE button around the shift shroud; its just a dead buttom on the base model.
I seriously wanted to say something to him about that but held my tounge hahaha.

Base + Sport = GO
Base = not so much
Car sales people arent really sales people...especially new ones...at the end of the day 90% of the buying public doesnt care about much of anything except price...which is how chevy sold so much dog crap for so long....sales people just want to find the price youll take the car for....if they have product knowledge...actual knowledge....consider youself lucky
Ive sold cars for a long time and 90% of the people I worked with over the years couldnt tell you how a cam shaft works or what an LSD is and why its nice to have one....the other 10% are gearheads like myself and jump at the opportunity to show people performance cars
In general performance cars bring in enthusiasts and those are the best test drives...bread and butter cars are all about the cup holders and how soft the ride is...
Right now I am working for a Mercedes store and AMG customers are usaully gearheads...not always but mostly...fun chatting with them about the C63 etc...in the end the customers know far more about the car than the sales people...you dont have to like cars to sell them unfortunatly which means our enthusiasm for them is lost in the shuffle
#1 question asked = whats your best best lowest bottom dollar price
#9988771652452425 = What size cams is this thing running?
You can see why a trained chimp could sell a car --- if price is the only thing you could buy a car at Ralphs in the self checkout lane...for some reason the auto industry still has "sales people" who are supposed to sell....the only thing they can "sell" is their price...most customers decide on a car way before they buy...
EDIT:
When I went in to take a look at the 370 I ran into some horrible people...but I knew going in that anyone short of a Z fan is not going to care about my questions...the avg Nissan sales guy seems like a green pea...new to car sales...If I asked them to describe the car from driving impressions I would probably get a blank stare...I would venture to say beyond doing 50-60mph in them going straight they wouldnt be able to tell you much of anything and 99% of test drives wont be able to either...most dealerships are in high traffic, straight road areas ....tough to feel out dynamics going straight....you test ride quality and acceleration...road feel...maybe a few low speed right handers...
Dont think thats much of anything to compare to the hours spent behind the wheel of your Z, driving hard down canyons....
I always wished there was test tracks for people to really "test drive" a car...insurance would probably be insane though lol
Be nice to really flog the cars your interested in to see what they feel like at the limit and pick the car that suits you the best...

I visited a Nissan Dealer last week to look at 2 black Twin GTRs they had in the show room. And i stumbled across a sales guy that i never stumbled across at. Hey suprised me with all the knowledge and the things he knew about the GTR and the 370Z. Stuff i didnt even know. He knew the history of the GTR pretty well. Needles to say i was really impressed with his knowledge about Nissan. He would be the guy to buy the car from...

that statement alone would classify you as a "Jack" to a car salesmen...
i would buy my car from the guy that offers me the car at the best price possible (invoice or lower, dont be a tard, ask to see the invoice
). and most important, lowest possible monthly...

So do you just go up in there and ask if you can test drive it? Or do you fake being interested in buying and then ask for a test drive? It seems that they just wont let you drive the cars for no reason....
