Default be on gaurd so cal.....the police are learning!

well i was comming home last night from watching the game and pulling down newland form warner in huntington beach. i see 4 hb cop cars at the 7-11 just chillin. was wasn't doing anything weong or speeding or anything but sure enough the lights were on my ***. so i pull over, give them my OREGON lic. and registration. (thank god i come from the frozen north!) and the officer who was way cool asked about it and i told him i'm here for school and then he asked about the car.....

that was the set up.....

well since they can't write me any tickets for my car(see my sig) they wanted to see what i was packing. i told them i would agree with them since hb cops can give you bullsh!t tickets for whatever more than any i've seen. So i pop the hood as asked and the trunk.

This is the bad part....

i don't know is everyone knows this but they told me that all orange/la/lb/sd cops are taking extensive classes to learn how to identify aftermarket products on all the import cars! i mean they knew more about my car than i did! it was scarry to think that thay have the 350z and g35 engine bay memorized!! So then the 4 cop car to to 6 then to 7 all the officers were talking trying to ask me questions, but i wouldn't give them anything! since there weren't going to write me a ticket they let me go.

Moral??

So everyone be very careful with your mods! They all know what to look for and we can't BS our way out of anything. I'm sorry if i might have don't something wrong to give away our modding intentions...but i try to comply with law enforcement....but trust me they all are learning so we must be careful.

Dustin(so glad to be from oregon!or else hello referee)

Good thing you did not get a ticket.

you're from FV, yet you still have your Oregon plates, etc.?

HB cops are d1cks, same goes with Costa Mesa, and other surrounding OC areas... careful out there and consider yourself lucky.

yeah, I know first hand. I got an appointment with the referee tomorrow.

When I got pulled over I was told the same thing........ all cops are taking some "street racing" courses. Apperantly the San Diego PD is incharge of the courses. They even have a special "street racing task force" and supposidly work hand in hand with aftermarket manufacturers, like APC (I couldn't help but to laugh when he told me APC like it was something to be proud off).

i'm from oregon thus i keep my status with my car there also....35.00 to reg. for 3 years, plus no sales tax equals lots of $$$ for mods! i'm living in FV while i go to school here. i know that if i where to change me residency i would never had done what i have done to my car.

So what could they find under your hood that would be illegal???

I realize it's illegal to street race but just because you have an aftermarket mod under your hood doesn't mean you WILL street race.

How can they ticket you if they don't actually see you racing?

They can pull you over as long as they have a reason(even for something so simple)... no front plate, exhaust, tints, etc. Basically, depending on how much of an azzh0le they are they will start from the small things and work on up to the major mods.

some of the questions that they asked me were if i had any cats, headers, different fuel injectors, intake, (mine you they asked before i opened the hood) and exhaust. THEY told me that sound fo your engine/exhaust has to be at a certain db. the carb EO certificate must be present, but can still write you a ticket for if they chose to, tint, lic plate, headlights must be at least a certain height. smoked taillights/headlights are a no no.(but i read the book and the law is very general on that i.e the color of the tail light must be a SHADE of "red") no BOVs.....and a couple more but i gave up listening to them when they started pissing me off cuz i was tired and wanted to go home. mind you i have no clue about most of these except the tinting of the tail lights, but from what i have been told these seem to come up a lot when some of those modded cars have to go to a referee, and replace with OEM parts again. so to answer your question my good doctor, you may not want or ever street race but to them your just another sheep to their herd, and here in cali thats a big herd.

funny you ask cuz one of them wanted to get one for his wife's g35c. and asked how much they are and who can install them? i told him to call vortech or go online to see(just in case they were asking me about tuner shops that they can stake out to catch racers or what not.) I guess that local PD don't want to waste their time with learning other state laws when they have more important things to be learning here in cali. plus i think in ORE its carb legal. not sure but i'm looking up the laws as we speak, anyone know where is a good place to find the law books online? or a good site that would have more info on it?
thanks, Dustin

Good luck man. I was pulled over about 8 months ago and given a ticket for my CAI (no CARB EO#). They also gave me a ticket for my exhaust (gross polluter). After hours of research I basically found out that an aftermarket exhaust does not need CARB as long as it is a cat back exhaust and does not have an EGR valve. This was confirmed by the BAR referee when I paid my visit (I showed up to BAR referee with my aftermarket exhaust still installed).
I asked the BAR referee what I could do to keep another ignorant cop from giving me a ticket for my exhaust. His short answer was nothing. If they write you a ticket you'll have to test again.
You're right though most of the laws are very general and I found it was quite a chore to find information in regards to CARB and CA VC. Good luck.

don't you have to pay to have the referee even come outside to look at your car? so even if that cop who wrote you a ticket was wrong you still have to pay little something to prove it? that happened with a buddy who had a wrx and the cop gave him a ticket for his OEM intercooler and when he took it to the referee the ref said "ok you are fine, but still pay me 45 bucks for my service" so he still lost out on 45 bucks just so some a-ho1e could sign off on a bs ticket! not cool i tell you not cool.

Dustin....I cant believe they noticed your car...gee...your car is so steathly...its blends right in with the other cars. I love your car...it looks sweet...but I bet those stickers and ground effect kit really attract the cop's attention. I guess the 20inch rims dont help too. hehe

Yea I had to go and have my car tested- visual and sniffer- cost $38. If I get pulled over again I have to go and have it retested. Paying $38 definitely sucks. But what sucks even more is that you have to appear in court (cannot just mail in the proof) which wastes half a day.

wow the rabbit hole gets deeper...like i said not cool at all. is there anything that we can do about it? probably not. i guess its all a gamble on whether or not you get a cool cop and that we don't blow our top.

I keep a copy of my BAR paperwork in my car (not that it will really matter). But I was also given a copy of a letter by a friend. The letter is from CARB to A'pex Intergation in regards to CARB policy on exhaust systems downstream of the catalytic coverter. It basically states that CARB policy is that exhaust system modifications downstream of the catalytic converter do not require a VC section 27156 (gross polluter) exemption. As long as the system does not use an EGR valve and as long as no sensors are relocated.
Hoping this will keep me from getting another ticket based out of ignorance (but not betting on it).

i hope that works out for you. Maybe since these cops are taking more courses about it, you might need to have that letter. (wishful thinking)

Default That's why I like the "stealth" look

No big wings, aftermarket ground effects, stickers, wild paint schemes, etc. for me. My car looks bone stock from the outside, unless you have a good enough eye to notice that the Borla exhaust tips are bigger than the stock tips.

I had a racing number from Spring Mountain that I left on my rear window for a while, but then decided to take it off, as I was just inviting trouble from the cops.
