Travis, but sorry to say...there is nothing you can do to prevent the soreness....your feet, ankles, calfs, quads, hamstrings, and butt will be sore....I would start stretching all of those ! When your young it doesn't bother you...when your my age...your in pain, pain, pain, the next day !
But just like working out when your muscles are sore...nothing makes it better than working out again & a nice Hot Jacuzzi with alcohol !

Fith speaks the truth - jacuzzi the entire day - after skiing for 30 min. and don't go up to the top on your first run - stick to the bunny slope - if you last over half the day there - make your last 2hrs dedicated to greens - or blacks........ lol but ultimately jacuzzi is the only way to win -

Stu!

they are both aggravating the first time - I learned to ski before snowboarding - and i skateboard still so that was more fun to me to snow board - but i think you should try both personally -

i think you will be more comfortable skiing - snowboarding does require a lot of balance and lean to and there is that unforgiving edge of the board - that is a bit difficult -

Travis, I would stay with the ski's since you haven't done it before. Unless you have an extensive background in surfing, skateboarding, wakeboarding, and already have skied before, then I would would say go for the snobrd'ng !
But you will only be on your A$$ the whole time and your wrists will be sore as hell.

You'll have better balance with the Ski's....your feet are separate, you have 2 poles to help out with balance also. I guess if you feel good a=bout it then one day you can rent a board and try it for half the day ?

* This is just a little tip/fact for you from me.....The faster you go...the easier it is to turn or intiate the turn...like riding a bike or motorcycle....it is hard to stay up and balance without forward inertia....make sense ?
So bunny slopes are fine to get your feet wet, but untilmately you need a little bit more grade to the hill to make it easier.

Anyways....good luck & be safe.

I went snowboarding once and had never been skiing. It's really just how confident you are in your ability to balance. Chris is right about needing speed. The best thing to remember though... ALWAYS be looking for a soft spot to bail. Once you lose control you need somewhere to crash.

yeah good point Chris - bunny is good for a minute but don't wear yourself out there - the greens can be reeeealllly fun and going slow on a snowboard is very odd - blues too - once you go black you won't go back...lol n - don'g crash next a tree top lol its a pain in the *** to get out of that deep snow! lol

good tips, i rode skateboards for a good 5 years so that stance is natural to me... but the part you said about the poles help you balance makes sense also..... and i plan i trying both see which one i like better

I went skiing a couple years ago with some friends, they all snowboarded. I spent the first two runs slowly skiing down while watching them all fall every 30 feet. Then one guy got a concussion and I spent the rest of the time at the health place.

I had snowboarded before when I was younger and knew I didn't want to do that. I dropped my heels while looking uphill and went straight backwards. Snowboarding might be fun, but you can't really relax like you do on skis.

Stu, if your good it doesn't take that much time to get your back foot in the binding. And with today's designs & improvements on them the straps are very easy to get on and off.

And Actually to be quite honest....I think SnoBrd'ng is much more relaxing if you just cruise and carve down the slopes or groomed runs. BUt I have been doing it since 1980 when it first evolved....seriously !
