2005 350Z - Turing

An LM1 sensor from Innovate MS was installed in the manifold ~1inch from the drivers side sensor.

Driver's side sensor = Bank 2

Received CIPHER yesterday. It is an awesome piece of software. It works on both my Z and my wife's Murano. You can even access the BCM (Body Control Module) and turn on the wipers and whetever else you want. And yes, you can adjust your idle while the vehicle is running. Have not use the data logging yet, but from what I looked at yesterday my car is running lean. One thing that does bother me is the fact that you can only monitor so many parameters at a time.

Anybody tried to use this with a display that would fit in the cubby? I'm thinking a small PC with a touch screen.

Let me start by saying this is a great tool for a laptop.

I have tried in on my 800x600 cubby touch screen, it's not really setup for it.

They did make an improvement from the first release to allow scrolling to the bottom of the setup box so you can hit the OK button. Before you could not get to it and had to kill the program to make it go away.

My biggest issue is all the screens it uses.

Try to imagine this on your little screen. (I may not be recounting exactly what happens because its been months since I bothered trying to use it and I would have to go out to the car and start it up to make the application run because it has no simulation mode for those trying to build interfaces with it)

You open Cipher and you click the connect button.

Another window pops up on top over the original one to tell you it connected (meanwhile there is all this room on the right side just showing a picture)

You click the start logging button and another window opens, anywhere on the screen it wants, on top of the first and you select what you want to log.

Then you click on the start logging button at the bottom and a new window, again opening anywhere it wants opens showing some of the gauges with a scroll bar on one side. You can start resizing this and get them all to fit if you play with it but it's tough with a finger.

It's unmanageable at best and makes it cumbersome enough that daily use is not practical.

All is not lost though, a good start to the improvements that could be made to this application to make it CarPC usable would be the following.

1) Have a "Favorites" startup settings that can start the application, connect to the car and open the gauges just by starting the application so it could be used instead of real gauges.

2) Have a tabbed application with all windows to open in the same window allowing easier application management.

Ultimately, an API that would allow others to make their own front ends would be optimal but just having the stuff above would be a great start.

I sent this request to them back at version 1.0 and other than the slider on the setting box, I have not seen any other improvements.

Chris

The limitation on the number of parameters that can be viewed or logged at any given time is a limitation of the software on the ECU from the factory.

Can the idle be decreased? I'm at 1000rpm now via TS reflash, and want to go back to stock idle.

I don't see why not. I was adjusting idle up and down without saving it.

Nice! One of these little slices of heaven may be on it's way to me in that case.

Just for monitoring capabiilties alone it was money well spent. The BCM control is great for bypassing suspected faulty switches. Best $440 I've spent on the car.

is there anyway to change the skin, and make it more user friendly for say a carputer? Also will we get any updates to the program for free once we purchase it or will we have to repurchase the program all over again??

I have and DO.

I'd be willing to build another system for you...

Updates for Cipher will always be free.

There has been discussion of making an SDK so people can build their own interface, but it's not in the cards for the immediate future.

V1.03 was just released on Monday.

My fav is the Cylinder Power Test that lest you shut down whichever cylinders you want. It's a great way to find a bad injector or coil (and a lot more).

I am still a bit lost on the A/F conversion. I plugged the software in and have been monitoring severall parameters, but I dont understand (after reading the user manual) how to get the conversion to get my actuall A/F ratio from the voltage. I just looked up one of my logs and I tried to just compare them side by side the graph, and at one point it looks like the car gets voltage so high its in the 30 A/F range I ddoubt that is possible. I am sorry but I have been searching about this for the last day and im still lost.

So you're talking about when you let the throttle snap closed? The AFR
DOES go to > 30 at that point.
There is a lean condition when load drops to almost nothing, timing gets
pulled and the injectors nearly turn on off...
The range of the WB sensor is only from 10 - 30AFR so 30 is where you see
it peak out.
It sounds like you have it set up right.

Hope that helps,
-Jared

^helped alot actually i see it came preloaded with the correction. I was just wondering how I could get an actuall number readout. Looks like I have to just compare the graph with it the voltage.

You have to set it up in the options menu. The main thing is that you have to match the chart up w/ your ECU part number (the ECU part number is displayed when you connect to the vehicle).
Check out section 17.7 in the user's guide.

After you've matched the conversion chart up w/ your ECU, there will be two new parameters to view/log called "AFR B1" or "AFR B2"

Is that what you were looking for?
