Altered Atmosphere Motorsports, Inc. is proud to present the ultimate in Digital Data logging, Diagnostic, and Monitoring systems for your Nissan 350Z and Infiniti G35. If you are a performance enthusiast you need the Cipher. There is no other product on the market that has the features or functionality of Cipher. Tuning your 350Z and G35 to perform at its highest levels of optimization, reliability, and performance requires the ability to know what is going with your car. This is where Cipher delivers and gives us an advantage we did not have in the past.
To have the most comprehensive knowledge of your vehicles engine several components were required in the past. These include:
Digital LCD Race Dash - $800 to $4500
Dual WB O2 Gauges - $800 to $2800
Snap-On Modus Scan-Tool - $8000
Total Spent - $$ WAY TO MUCH $$
For $400 the Cipher matches and beats most features the products listed above provide. Following is a brief description of some of Ciphers capabilities:
-Scan Tool
-OBD-II Codes
-Idle RPM Adjust
-Dual WideBand 02 (04.5+)
-Timing Adjust
-Datalogging
-Configurable Digital Dash
-Many other functions
Total Spent - $400
Cipher is the newest and most advanced PC-Based Datalogging Diagnostic Tool for all Nissan 350Z’s and Infiniti G35’s. The Cipher system is the all in one solution for monitoring and performing factory adjustments to the OEM ECU.
Essentially Cipher is a consumer-based version of the Dealer-Only Nissan Consult-II Diagnostic Tool. The Consult-II is a Nissan supplied computer that dealers use to scan all OBDII Nissan vehicles. To replicate only a small portion of the Consult-II’s capabilities you may spend well in excess of $6000 for an aftermarket scan tool such as the Snap-On Modus Scanner.
What is ODBII?
OBDII stands for On-Board Diagnostics II. This system is derived from the need for manufactures to meet more and more stringent EPA emissions standards. The need to control emissions resulted in the addition of electronic sensors to monitor the condition of the engine and all related emissions functions. OEM’s further developed the OBDII system so that dealerships could monitor all engine functions and sensor readouts for diagnostic information. This is not part of the universal OBDII standard and thus many scan tools will not support these manufacture specific sensor information and diagnostic codes.
What is Cipher and Consult-II?
Both systems communicate with your factory ECU and read its parameters, sensors, and codes. Because of this Cipher and the Consult-II system capabilities are essentially one in the same. Cipher is easily installed on your laptop or in-car PC vs. the Consult-II which is a hand held unit. With Cipher a USB to OBDII cable is connected to your car and your PC. This allows you to communicate back and forth with the factory ECU. The software interface of Cipher gives you all the power of the Consult-II. Now you have the power of the dealerships diagnostics on your laptop computer and can do all the things the dealer is able to do with the Consult-II system.
Diagnostic
The diagnostic system within Cipher allows you to quickly and easily find trouble codes when a “Malfunction Indicator Lamp” (MIL), “Check Engine Light” (CEL), or “Service Engine Soon” (SES) warning is tripped. This capability goes far beyond basic misfire or O2 Sensor codes. You will be able to read and clear codes from the ABS system, the traction control system, any safety restraint systems, and other control modules. These features by themselves make Cipher invaluable to any Nissan enthusiast.
Datalogging
No Wide-Band? No problem. Now you can use your TWO extremely precise pre-installed factory Nissan NTK wideband sensors on all ’04.5+ models. Dual Innovate Gauges $798 plus installation fees… Cipher system: $400 no installation required!
Datalogging is one of the most important capabilities of the Cipher system. It allows you to monitor and track a wide range of engine parameters and functions. The logging system offers an analytical charting system that allows you to replay all the ECU sensors or a select few after a run down the 1320 (1/4 mile) or a lap at the track. Since you cannot keep your eyes on the screen there is a very advanced playback system that allows you to look at min/max values and compare these to other values.
Tuning
Tuning is the most important aspect of building a reliable, optimized, and powerful performance vehicle. There are two ways to go about tuning a car. With your eyes open or with your eyes closed. The former is obviously the best! This is where Cipher delivers. Cipher allows you to have the ability to monitor and log every single ECU parameter so that you can keep tabs on what is going on with your motor.
If your professional tuner does not have this tool then please make sure they are aware of its availability. Not only will it aid your tuning session, it will help ensure that your 350Z & G35 receive the most reliable tune.

These parameters are the same the dealer can adjust with their Consult-II Nissan scan tool.
There is no fuel adjustment.

[QUOTE=aalzuhair]
The factory idle can be increased to about 950rpm (200-250rpm over factory). There is one exception in that neither Cipher or the Nissan Consult can increase the idle on the 2004.5 model year 350Z and G35.
Hope this helps,

By how much?
Can you take it to let's say 1000rpm?

Hi Havok,
Sorry for the delay. I think some of the guys have left for the weekend. It will work with the UTEC. There are actually two situations. In an NA application is will work terrifically because you will be able to log the ECU parameters for the entire range of operating conditions. In a boosted application the Cipher tool will only provide accurate timing and fuel information when out of boost or when the UTEC is not operating as a standalone. Having said that, the benefit of being able to log the factory sensors in a boosted car is just as important even if fuel and timing are not utilized other then as a baseline. Also, the analytical graphing is much easier to read and understand with the Cipher. The digital dash also provides a tremendous amount of information that was previously unavailable with a good sampling rate.

Interesting, please verify.
I thought that UTEC does not “fudge the AF ratios going back to the ECU”, based on this post that Jermaine wrote on G35driver site.
So instead of buying additional WB sensors one could use Cipher.

I'm curious, will this work with the VQ35 for the Altima (02-04)? I'm assuming that the 05+ Altimas that use the 350z/G35 ECU it'll be fully compatible with.

Mike,
Are the changes made to the idle and timing flashed in to the ECM and permanent or just while the lap top is hooked up to the ECM?
