wow. i have tried over and over, but I can't access the tuner through my laptop at all. I can't get anything to show up on the hyperterminal screen.

I had no problems (and still don't) accessing the UTEC through hyperterminal, (directly connected to the UTEC though.)

I have tried connecting the RJ-12 cable via the serial adapter and also through a usb-serial adapter. no luck either way. The tuner is powering up just fine...countsdown, shows "gas", etc. Currently, I only have the O2 sensor sitting in free-air and I was trying to connect with the car in the "ON" position, but not running. This shouldn't make a difference; it hasn't w/ the UTEC.

I have tried using the original hyperterminal connection I setup for the UTEC (manual says that it will work and not necessary to create a new connection.)
I have tried making new connections.
I have tried different emulators...
NOTHING!!!

unfortunately, the Tuner came w/ no instructions and the online instructions are for the older Tuner. everything seems about the same though.

UPDATE: The CD that came with the Tuner had a supplementary instruction set for the Gen 2 tuner, but there isn't anything in there that I figured out already.

any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Does the tuner have the USB input like the UTEC? That is how I connect via Hyperterminal through COM port 6.

I've had issues at work using the USB/Serial cable connecting to switches and routers because the drivers or cable is no good.

 

unfortunately, the tuner only has an RJ-12 (telephone style) cable. TXS sends a serial-rj12 adapter with the tuner.

 

Have you tried lowering the baud rate to 4800 bps?

Also, sometimes HT likes to hang from the last connection. When you are connected to the tuner and HT shows a blank screen, have you pressed "enter"? Sometimes this helps to refresh HT.

 

i have tried enter and esc to get it to refresh. I have not tried changing the baud rate yet.

 

I was looking through the tuner manual and noticed on page 7 about the dip switches. Have you confirmed correct orientation? All the dip switches should be in "up" except for 3 which can be in down for free air calibration. But normal operation all switches in up position.

 

Baud rate didn't do anything for me.

there are no more dip switches on the new Tuners. the manual on TXS's website is for the older Tuner.

 

Can you flash the Tuner with the new v 2.3??

the tuner actually gets power and starts up, just wont link up to hyperterminal correctly, i had this same problem a long long time ago... then it all came together. im sure it will be something stupid andrew...

I thoiught about that but I need a connection before I can do that.

 

The flash will tell you if you can connect or not.. It will go through the com ports(auto detect) and find it.. If you can connect through the flash, then you can connect through HT.. Try it, if you CANT connect/flash then I would call TXS..

 

I havent gotten my rig up and running yet, but I was wondering if the RJ-12 could be directly connected into the phone jack of the pc, and then use hyperterminal pointed through that port?

Is it ok to connect to the Tuner completed standalone, outside the car, with nothing attached except the laptop and power? The Tuner manual doesn't say much about this whole aspect. It isn't near as clear as the UTEC manual.

Has anyone gotten the RJ-12 <> Serial <> USB adapter working yet? I think Ken was trying that.

And can I use the same 9v plug from the UTEC to power the tuner if I am able to use it standalone? Again, the manual just does not cover stand alone use so I'm not even sure if it is recommended.

You need to connect the RJ12 out of the Tuner into the RJ12-DB9 adapter. That is the only way to connect to the Tuner. If you want (or need), you can connect that adapter to a USB-Serial adapter.
I can connect using either. I bought a USB-Serial adapter from best BUY; it was the only one they had, but it wokrs perfectly.

Also, you can "bench test" your Tuner by hooking up a 9V battery to the power adapter. Try that before you put it into the car. That way, you can make sure that you don't have connection problems.

I, originally, couldn't connect to my tuner because over either a bad RJ-12 or RJ12 adapter,...or BOTH. I sent everything back to TXS. They tested it and sent me back my Tuner but with a new RJ12 and a new adapter.

 

Thx! Was just wondering cuz sometimes we connect to devices at work through console ethernet or console rj-12. So I thought maybe it was possible since you can point HT at the dial-up port.

I'll try the USB-to-Serial adapter too. Plus I'd really like a dedicated laptop to keep in the car. I'm looking at old Panasonic Toughbooks to see what kind of temp tolerances they have. True Mil-Spec is 130F, which is normally enough. Would be nifty though!
