I logged 4 runs and looked at the timing and basically averaged them out.. The timing for each run isnt going to be the same, maybe a degree off at the most.. At each rpm range just add .5 at a time until you start NOT making more power, or start to knock. Your not going to make more power by advancing more than +2 over stock timing with 0 knock.. So right around +2 over your STOCK timing is where you want to be.. You will also hvae to keep an eye on your A/F as that will change too... Easiest way to do the timing is on the dyno because you can see where your making the most power.. I have yet to do the dyno but my cars timing is advanced +2 in most areas, just before I start knocking.. I need to get to the dyno..
thanks for the info...i have also read that in other posts taking away timing actually gives gains as well as wierd as that may sound. in fact, the tuner in that post was surprised to see gains from taking timing out but these were done on the dyno. i guess the only true way to know would be to get on the dyno...as you mentioned to see where you stop making power.

i think i may change timing on my next dyno run and see what happens...you never know how much you can get until you try it.

This thread was a great read - thanks guys. Road Warrior, I'd love to see how your tuner changed the log output to get the 20 hp...

Great read. I'm hoping to have my UTEC installed in the next week along with my Greddy TT's. My question is this. I'm just going with the UTEC, map switch, and sensor for now. I can't afford the UTEC WB tuner just yet, so what should i do? Is there a cheaper way that will work until i can afford it, or can i go with out it for a while and still be safe? BTW, my UTEC is coming from Sharif@Forged with his FI map(s) already installed.

Yes you can live without the tuner. But you're going to get tuned though right? Thats important. Don't rely on anyone elses maps even from Sharif.

oh, right. No, i'm not planning on living off his maps. From what i understand, it's just to help me get my car running and provide a solid platform to fine tune my car for the mods and climate conditions (among other things). But if i can go w/o the tuner, what then is it's best selling point? I know O2 voltage is a great tool to use, but if don't have the UTEC TUNER or any way to read O2 (for the time being), how much am i really missing out on?

The tuner makes it easier for your shop to tune. But most shops will use their own wideband anyhow. The tuner also makes it possible for YOU to do logging and tweak the tune by providing the AFR with every line of data logged. Without it you need another way to log AFR's with the data. I use Mps_uteclogger software with my AEM wideband gauge. But the tuner module would be much more convenient. The tuner module is just another wideband (without the nice gauge) that hooks into the UTEC for logging purposes. It is an optional accessory.

are you going to tune yourself, or have a shop do the tuning? either way, i think you need to be able to read your a/f. please correct me if i am wrong here, but dialing in the a/f is one of the most important parts of the tuning process.

a shop should be able to provide an a/f reading, using an exhaust sensor but that is not as accurate as a sensor in front of your cats. you could have a bung welded in before the cats, and your tuner can then get a more accurate reading of your a/f when they plug in their sensor to that location vs the exhaust.

my a/f reading was compared to his exhaust and mine was much more accurate....thus i was able to optimize my level of tuning.

having the tuner there in front of him made the process go much faster as well as he was able to see the logs of each run and make adjustments without having to go back and forth to the dyno.

i am no expert, but that was my observation. the reason for getting the tuner was to be able to dial in your a/f if tuning yourself. what i am not sure of is if you can get a stock reading of your a/f without the tuner.

since your fi...knock will also be important. there is a stock sensor, or you can install an additional sensor for the tuner.

since your fi...i would definately make sure you have what you need to tune properly. call sharif and make sure....he should be able to answer those questions.

There's also a nice section that explains plenum design

gives a little insight into why people with the rev-up like to switch their lower collector to the MREV, MREV2, etc.

Lots of good info in the book. Also lots of irrelevant info to the 350Z. But overall, worthwhile.

I'm hoping that after reading it I'll be able to tweak a UTEC on my NA car without blowing it up.

Thanks Wired! I'm going to purchase the book too, so when I purchase my Utec I'll have an idea how to tune it myself. I'll probably have Jeremy at Performance Factory tune it first time though....

well i just bought the pop charger and mrev2...so more dynos to come.

i don't know if i will do them individually, or both at the same time. it makes more sense to dyno and tune with both installed so thats the way i am leaning. the only reason to do them individually would be to see what kind of gains they make independent of each other...and that really does not benefit me.

i don't think anyone else has done an mrev2 + 287 + crawford plenum dyno. i just don't have the money to dyno them independently or i would to see what the differences would be. so the difference between the last tune and this one will include the pop charger and mrev2. my other mods are listed in this post somewhere if your wondering.

i will also be playing with timing this go around so that should be informative as well....and hopefully beneficial. this time, i can have my maps all ready to go before i get there and then make any necessary changes from there saving a little time and money.

so, more tuning and more logging to come...stay tuned

So, more dynos to come from me aswell

Later
