Unhappy Ordered the AAM reflash. Should I spend the extra 400 for dyno tune?

hey guys. my girlfriend just bought me the AAM reflash for christmas. I live in north carolina so i thought it would be convenient to drive up to maryland and have it tuned in person on the dyno since that will custom tailor it to my car. Anyway I read that it takes them about 45 minutes to do it so I was thinking they my charge me like 75 bux for an hour on the dyno. When i got home today she told me that they said it was going to be 385 additional for the dyno time. I'm just wondering if you guys who have experienced this think its worth the extra money to go ahead and get the dyno tune. Any input would be appreciated.

so let's say 595 for a flash and 385 for tunning . hmm i'd get the utec and load the base n/a map on there or you could get it tune later.

I had it done and found it a waste of money. If you are NA...I would recommend against it. I have a post up about my experience, just do a search for threads started by me. I would either do the UTEC or the APEX'i SAFC II depending on how much tuning you want

are you done with modding your car for awhile? Are you willing to take the time to tune the car yourself?

-by the time you buy a Utec or similar device, install it, and then get a tune (either on a dyno [more $], or through buying/renting a wideband O2 reader, you'll have spent a good amount of $$...IMO, it's worth it if you're willing to do the install and tuning yourself AND if you'll continue to modify your car

*I'm opting for AAM's reflash b/c I know myself...95% of the time, I get it how I like it and then don't touch it for a long time. Plus, I'm way to busy at the moment to pick-up another project. AAM is really good at Reflashes for our car - it's just cheaper and easier (for me)

-Peter

btw: I'll always like the idea of Utec type devices b/c I like to customize things myself, but I'm marriage, own a house, and have a busy job...so I've had to choose less time consuming car mods.

I would buy the UTEC, and this is coming from someone who had the reflash done prior to the UTEC.

Back when i had my Reflash done i also did the dyno tune and made good power. But the Utec was not available then. Since the UTEC i made more power on top of the reflash.

If i was you i would skip the reflash and go straight to the UTEC.

I realize the OP is talking about a gift, and you can't look a gift horse in the mouth, but if it were me I would drive the other direction on I-95 and let Sharif do EMS + tune, or keep on going up I-95 to Jersey for MRC. Those guys in the middle have shown me enough times 1st hand that they are all about PR and $, not about the customer.

You can raise the limit in Open Loop mode, but very few NA guys run that way.

not sure if you'd make any more power when you keep everything constant - it'll just depend on how much you're willing to push it (AFR, timing,...). It seems the main upside to a Utec is that every little change you make, you can reprogram it to compensate. (You can also store multiple maps for different octane fuels, a performance mod, a fuel saving map...)

AAM's reflash you can change the redline and remove top speed limiter, as well as changing timing/AFR.

ok guys so my original question was, is the dyno time worth it? as stated its a gift so the utec isn't an option right now. maybe when i graduate andgo FI I'll get the utec but until then its the aam reflash. so is it worth 400 dollars for the dyno time?

Lets look at it this way..
They make the reflash, but will charge you $400 on top of the reflash for a 45 min custom dyno tune.. hrm...

Doesnt sound like the type of business I would want to associate myself with or support.

$400 for an hour dyno? seems pretty expensive to me. I would just go with the reflash, it should be sufficient until you can afford a proper EMS.

Cheers,

it sounds expensive, but to actually get someone's time and equipement to fully tune a car can be very pricey - AAM's website says it'll take 45 minutes for them to do a straight forward flash (no dyno-tuning -- they flash the ECU based on what mods you have [they've done enough cars that they have different maps saved for different modifications])...I bet they spend a good amount more time if they're actually doing a custom dyno-tune.

Ask them what their average time is for custom tuning.

not to mention sharif charges 400 to tune the utec on the dyno. which probably takes about the same amount of time if i had to guess.

YEs if you are jsut getting a straight reflash
otherwise No brainer...get the utec...
specially if you think you will do more later on....
screw all that BS that its worth it ..and people saying that with the utec you have to retune and costs more....
when its all said and done... you are stuck with the reflash and if you do more... same thing

with the utec, ...the install isn't that hard... you have all the potential for n/a and Fi if you alter choose to go that way... load a base map from out there and you will be fine .....
if you noticed other than the dude with AAM in his sign has pretty much said its worth...

almost everybody else specially those who has been in the same position as you, went with the utec.
I would do the same =]
