Default Turbo XS BCS install: boost map needed**and wiring**

Can someone pass on to me a good place to start with my boost map for my Utec?

This is going on an STS kit which has a seperate waste gate.

I wanted to start around 6 psi and work it up to 7.5 psi.

thanks for the help in advance

What WS spring did you order? Mine came with a 4.5 spring so I can set my boost as low as that.

okay so I got a starting point, now what is with all the wires on the bcs ? hahaha

red constant 12v?
blue goes to pin #2 on the utec
black goes to ground?

The install manual for the BCS shows just two wires(from turbo xs's website). I suppose I could hook the thing up to a 12v source and figure it out. It appears like the BCS can be hooked up to a Utec directly with the molex plug but not the 350z utec? Does anyone have an insite as to what the different wires do? Without a manual for my particular BCS, I am lost.

Incase anyone ever searches for the same thing I did for a long time and this thread happens to pop up:

Blue and red go to switch 12v+
Black goes to the #2 pin on the molex plug of the utech.

as far as boost maps go, are you runnign in open loop or closed loop boost control? are you using both ports on you external wastegate or just the side port? all this makes a difference.

Open loop is where I am going to start. Someone sent me a place to start but if you have some suggestions, I am all ears.

I am using an external wastegate. I read through a thread where you posted your experience with the boost controller. That helped a lot. I just wondered if anyone had found anything that worked consistantly with external wastegates, close or open loop. The suggestions I got are for an open loop boost map.

Obviously, the tuners who are on these boards have it all figured out but why would they share? They are in this for money after all. I need a map so I can get my car tuned on my "high boost" map. SPG (the nearest Utec tuner I trust) wanted to sell me a high dollar boost controller(HKS) which I decided to pass on.

Anyway, thanks for the help!

I never messed with open loop.

I only use the closed loop control.
in open loop, you are basically controlling the solenoid duty cycle. again, it depends on how you have your wastegate setup. using both ports is the best way to set up an external wastegate for use with the BCS.

assuming you are using both ports, the bcs will be regulating how much boost goes to the top port. 0% duty cycle will not open the BCS and will basically be like running on the wastegate spring. 100% will hold the bcs open and allow the most boost your setup can possbly run. (don't do this!!!)

Start with small values and work your way up to where you want to go. you will find that you will hit slightly higher boost numbers in each successive gear. (more load) Try just setting values in the 90 and 100% TPS columns. that way you will only be setting the boost control under WOT times. later, you can go back and set you part throttle boost control.

REMEMBER: THE AXES FOR BOOST TUNING ARE TPS vs. RPM. It is NOT Load vs. RPM

That helps a lot! Thanks.

Sorry, yes I will be using both wastegate ports to control boost.

Any difference if you are only using one port? I think I'm only using one and so far I'm good with Open Loop.

https://my350z.com/forum/showthread....t=turbo+XS+BCS

past the MRC vs Sharif bickering, there is good information. From what I understand, the BCS unit can control boost better with both ports of a seperate wastegate like we have athenG. The single port method is intended for the internal wastegates. *Edit* I did not find anyone stating there is a significant between the two but there is a difference between internal actuators and external wastegate maps(open loop maps). So which is better? Who knows?

Only person who knows is MRC or anyone else who has messed with the Utec bcs on different setups

No...Start the boost map in the 70-100% load colums, start low like the value of 5 if in Closed loop boost control where it controls BCS duty cycle, and then work your way up until you hit the desired boost levels..A good way to spool up faster is the parameter "wastegate closed below", just be careful not to spike or overboost when using this.

But, to clearify, open loop = duty cycle, closed loop = desired unitless value, correct?

In open loop (duty cycle) you have no feed back, so I don't think the boost gain will have an effect on boost. In closed loop (unitless value) the boost gain would come in to play as the UTEC is controlling the solenoid using its own logic.
MRC Responds: correct...Closed loop 0-500 values. What turbo system you have and what actuators you using?
Keep in mind in open loop you may have a value of say 60 (representing 60% duty cycle) at 70-100% TP from 2000 rpms-5000 rpms, and you may see a rapid boost climb to say 16 psi, then a slight drop off toward red line. Perhaps try using lower intial values to make a slower spool up and boost climb.

I tried to take what I could out that thread and condense it down. These were some key pieces of information I thought. There is lots of good information in that thread for anyone who reads this now or later.

Mine works fine. I'm set for 8psi and the most I have seen is 8.6psi so I don't think that is a big deal. Were do you hook up the second line?

setting upa map for a single port wastegate is different than if using both ports of a dual port wastegate.

Basically, you need to understand what is going on..............

On an internal wastegate or when using just the side port of a dual port watsegate, you need to restrict the "boost" signal to the gate/actuator to be able to "turn up" the boost. Restricting the "boost" to the side port/actuator, puts less force toward fighting the gate srping to open the gate. Hence, it will take more boost to open the gate since you aren't allowing all the boost to be scene at the gate.

when using both ports on a dual port wastegate, you attach a boost/vacuum line to the side port and don't mess with that line. on the top wastegate port, you need to connect a "boost/vacuum" line that passes through the BCS (BCS is between the intake manifold and the wastegate.) In this scenario, you open up the BCS to allow "boost" into the top port of the gate. Doing so creates equal "boost" presssure on both sides of the wastegate diaphram... and allows the gate spring to hold the gate closed....allowing more boost than just possible on just the spring alone.

Basically, the BCS works oppositely in these 2 scenarios. Scenario 1, you are trying to limit the amount of boost going to the gate. Scenario 2 has you allowing boost to the top gate port to help the spring hold the gate closed.

Hope this helps understanding how it works.

/\ thanks for the explanation! I just verified mine and it does only run on the side port. Mine work fine right now and I'm not sure if its worth all the hassle to use both port right now.

Good post Quadcam.

I just got off the phone with Mark@Turbo XS:
I asked him which was better: dual port or single port if one had the option of either or? He said that in the dual port setup you have more control of the wastegate.

This is sort of obvious but I wanted to get that straight from the horse's mouth because with the STS kit, the wastegate lines are a bit long and a pain to run.

+1, I 'm not sure if there is much of a big difference. I don't want to run another long A$$ line if this only give me 10% improvement. Here is my 5th Gear Pull that I did a few weeks ago. I'm hitting 8psi at around 3300rpm, also don't worry about the A/F coz Utec Over Compensated at that time.
