Logmein: Remote tuning...
Eh guys.
Over in one of the other threads in the FI section there was some discussion about how a tuner who wasn't familiar with Osiris was getting some tips over the phone during the tune from an actual Osiris tuner... then sending the ROM back and forth.
I'm not really savvy when it comes to tuning, but I know a little more about computers. One of the programs that comes to mind in this kind of situation is logmein. Basically, it's a remote user software program that, when installed on a computer, can be logged into simply through an internet browser anywhere in the world. This access is password protected- It then basically gives the remote user full access to everything on the computer in real time.
Would it be realistic to have a laptop connected via wireless to the internet while performing the tune- and have a "consult" tuner logged into it and overseeing the show? If necessary the consult tuner could take over and make adjustments during the pulls.
Possible? Or am I out to lunch?

Is better teamviewer by the way...
Possible yes... but practical? There's alot more to tuning than adjusting cells and looking at charts. Hearing and feeling how the car reacts to changes is a big part... pretty hard to hear detonation or other possible issues thru logmein. That said there are some great tuners that would probably pass on this.
Well- I see what a couple of you are saying. In essence let's take a look at it this way. A guy knows how to tune Haltech really well and has a good grasp of tuning in general. Knows what to listen for, knows the lingo, generally knows what should go where but isn't as comfortable with the format of another particular program. Let's just say Osiris.
For example- the shop I'm at now in BC is good at tuning in general... but the pro Osiris tuner from the shop that did my build is 4-5 hours away and in a different country. When the guys from my shop are hooked into the car to do the tune, if they were connected wirelessly to the internet and had logmein running, my tuner from farther away could log into that computer and ensure that things had that "pro tuner" polish on them- taking over the controls when necessary to touch things up the way I saw him doing it between pulls last time I was down there.
In the case of this other guy who had a local tuner who was good but not familiar with Osiris- they (him, the tuner and the other shop) basically spent (by his description) 3 hours on the phone going back and forth and ended up mailing the ROMs back and forth making adjustments.
Anyway, I guess what I'm getting at isn't that all tuners would jump on board and think it's a great idea to remote tune... as much as to ask that in a situation like the one above where someone from another shop is willing to help out (not for free I wouldn't imagine)... This type of remote system management might be a way to do it that would balance out the need for the fine tuning, while having someone in the driver seat who had enough experience overall to recognize and describe negative signs. An earpiece with a mic would allow the guys to stay connected by voice through the connection, as well as have two sets of eyes on the software in real time.
Osiris Pro tuners for example aren't immediately available to me where I am- though I do have some guys who know the software well enough to tune reasonably well. I'd like to put a polish on it but right now taking the car over the border isn't my favourite idea (though I'll have to get back on the horse eventually I guess).
One of the things I really like about MonkeyNutz Racing in Burnaby, BC is that they're not opposed to picking up the phone and networking with other shops. Intec, in Kent WA- the guys who did my build- are also very outgoing in resolving issues through their network of shops and the techs do help each other out when the opportunity presents itself. I figured this might just be one easier way to do that between shops that already scratch each other's backs.

3 hours on the phone ending up mailing out the ROM is on the order of 'special needs'. No offense to your go-to guy but I wouldn't want that guy tuning my F/I car with any EMS.

Seems it might be something a tuner could probably do quite easily provided they were open to helping out... again I'd expect a guy to charge a fee for it unless it really was just for good PR.
