K&N Drop-In Woes?

K&N Drop-In Woes?
I've been reading on the forums that purchasing a CAI is worthless and your better off going with K&N replacements.
So, I was price shopping and found them cheapest at Amazon.com
I then read the 1 review it had along with it, here it is...

Is this a viable issue or is this guy smoking pcp?

I have a brand new 2008 Nissan 350Z roadster. At 500 miles I decided to install K&N air filters for that vehicle. After 1,000 miles I reinstalled the OEM air filters. The K&N air filters must have given the engine management computers problems. Acceleration with the K&N filters was very touchy, the engine surged, and a small press of the accelerator would make the vehicle lurch ahead then stumble. I switched back to the OEM filters and everything has returned to normal. I would not recommend K&N filters for use on a 350Z 3.5 liter V6. K&N part number 33-2399.

My guess is the guy didn't put the filter in right. The K&N is definitely a better filter than OEM, but the airflow isn't different enough to cause all kinds of engine issues. It's also possible that he had all other kinds of mods and when he dropped in the filter it sent it over the edge, but I'm leaning towards him not putting it in right.
It almost sounded like he had a bad MAF also.

Mine are fine as well. I wonder if he was experiencing the stuttering problems that many HR owners have experienced.

Sounds like too much oil (only way I can think of it causing an issue).
You can't get air passed the maf with a botched filter install. The engine runs fine with no filters, so its not too much airflow.
That leaves too much oil, oil drips onto maf, dirties maf, when he returned to stock and oil drip is gone the maf cleans itself and is fine.
Just don't over oil them, it WILL ruin your maf's.

Try pm'ing A.H. or infinite for more info, they have before and after dyno sheets to prove it also look and search for threads around here, tons of people have em. Injen's CAI has long tubes that positions the filters directly behind the grill so it's getting cold outside air compared to the K&Ns drop in filter, which pulls hot air from the engine bay instead.
Colder air = more power.
Colder air = more power.

This is a good post right here though, it's common sense.
