Default K&N Drop-In Woes?

I've been reading on the forums that purchasing a CAI is worthless and your better off going with K&N replacements.

So, I was price shopping and found them cheapest at Amazon.com

I then read the 1 review it had along with it, here it is...

I have a brand new 2008 Nissan 350Z roadster. At 500 miles I decided to install K&N air filters for that vehicle. After 1,000 miles I reinstalled the OEM air filters. The K&N air filters must have given the engine management computers problems. Acceleration with the K&N filters was very touchy, the engine surged, and a small press of the accelerator would make the vehicle lurch ahead then stumble. I switched back to the OEM filters and everything has returned to normal. I would not recommend K&N filters for use on a 350Z 3.5 liter V6. K&N part number 33-2399.

Is this a viable issue or is this guy smoking pcp?

-or- does the computer need to be reset after replacing the air filters (and this guy didn't do it)?

My guess is the guy didn't put the filter in right. The K&N is definitely a better filter than OEM, but the airflow isn't different enough to cause all kinds of engine issues. It's also possible that he had all other kinds of mods and when he dropped in the filter it sent it over the edge, but I'm leaning towards him not putting it in right.

It almost sounded like he had a bad MAF also.

ya think?..K&N wouldn't be around long if their effing air filter threw the car into a tizzy.

I have a K&N drop in and it works fine. I've never had an issue.

No issues with my K&N drop in filter.

Maybe the guy sprayed extra filter oil on it which gummed up the MAF sensor?

Mine is fine, too. I think I've put about 10K miles on it. You shouldn't have to reset anything. Well, at least I didn't.

K, cool. Thanks guys, really appreciate it.

I just purchased the car Weds for $23k, new. I have about 300ish on it now, I absolutely love it!

My previous ride was hard to let go though (07 altima), alot of sweat and money put into it but in the end, worth the trade.

Mine are fine as well. I wonder if he was experiencing the stuttering problems that many HR owners have experienced.

Have never heard of an aftermarket air filter causing problems like the ones this guy experienced. Chances are he simply put the filter on incorrectly.

Sounds like too much oil (only way I can think of it causing an issue).

You can't get air passed the maf with a botched filter install. The engine runs fine with no filters, so its not too much airflow.

That leaves too much oil, oil drips onto maf, dirties maf, when he returned to stock and oil drip is gone the maf cleans itself and is fine.

Just don't over oil them, it WILL ruin your maf's.

A lot of members use the injen CAI and gained some power. And +1 on the guy over-oiling the filter.

Try pm'ing A.H. or infinite for more info, they have before and after dyno sheets to prove it also look and search for threads around here, tons of people have em. Injen's CAI has long tubes that positions the filters directly behind the grill so it's getting cold outside air compared to the K&Ns drop in filter, which pulls hot air from the engine bay instead.

Colder air = more power.

Right, I just read the first few pages of this thread and steered towards K&N but after reading some more, i'm starting to change my mind and follow this..

1) Exhaust
2) - Cats
3) Intake

This is a good post right here though, it's common sense.
