"Nissan 450Z All-Wheel Drive V8 Planned
February 6, 2007
- - - The Scoop - - -
Nissan has made plans to cram a 4.5L V8 motor into the popular 350Z body. They will call it the 450Z. Nissan has mentioned that their target horsepower level for the 450Z is in the 400+ range. The V8 that Nissan has in mind is the same engine used in a few of Infiniti's current vehicles. For Nissan buffs - the motor is speculated to be the VK45DE configuation from Infiniti's M45, Q45, and FX45 models.
What fun would 400+ horsepower be without a means to apply it to the ground? It is anticipated that Nissan will roll out the 450Z with something similar to Audi's Quattro All-Wheel Drive. There's just not anything quite like roasting all four tires.
There is one hold-up on the 450Z however; The motor in question for the 450Z doesn't pass emissions in all of the countries that Nissan intends to market the 450Z. Nissan is going to have to modify the engine to meet Euro IV standards. The engine should have its makeover by early 2007, as 2007 is the year Nissan plans on launching Infiniti on a multi-national level - and in order to do so, the motor will have to be up to snuff as far as emissions regulations go..
That being said - if Infiniti makes it on a global level, the road is already paved for the Nissan 450Z. The release date is rumored to be sometime in 2009.

"Nissan is planning a Z sports coupe slotted above the current Nissan 350Z called the Nissan 450Z. The upgraded model will feature a 4.5 liter V8 engine which would likely be a tuned up version of the VK45DE from the Infiniti M45. The VK45DE makes 340hp currently, but Left Lane News reports the final product will feature 430hp. Of course, all that crazy power requires all-wheel drive, so that will be standard as well.
Nissan plans to pitch this new Nissan 450Z against the Porsche Carrera 911 and the Maserati 4.2."

OK, I know you guys might think I am crazy, but why does one of the Z's in the photo here have a hood scoop? Manufacturers do not put scoops in cars for looks, they are functional. What is under that scoop? A different motor that needs clearance?

i dont hink there will be a v8 z, nissan would just go back to FI. maybe a 3.7 standard and a option of turbo (3.5/3.7). Its been a long time since nissan offered a z engine option.

Either way would be cool. I guess we will have to wait and see. Still curious why that car had the hood scoop.

Would a V8 Z make sense in this economy and with gas prices the way they are? Would be nice if they can get gas mileage like the LS7's V8. If Nissan does want a 400hp Z car why not just turbo the 3.7 hr? It can easily handle over 500hp on the stock internals so why not just slap a turbo on it? Maybe they dont want to spend the money to recertify or certify a new motor so they are thinking about using the VK45de since its already certified?
Eitherway Id be shocked to see a 400hp Z anytime soon. Maybe the Nismo version will have this motor. I really hope if they do do this that they keep that engine exclusive to the Nismo or whatever trim Z gets that motor, unlike the 35 Anniversary treatment.

Hmm... I wouldn't be comfortable with that idea. It would be deja vu when Nissan dropped the L series i6 for the VG30 series V6 engines.

A V8 Z with the world economy in the state it is, it is a stretch to keep hope for that to happen. And a 4 wheel drive V8 Z? Not going to happen IMO. Why would Nissan take the Z up closer to the level of the GTR?
Would no doubt be cool. But IMHO I just don't see it.
