Default Powdercoating

Was thinking about powdercoating rims gloss black since I am having a hard time finding aftermarket rims in gloss black that I like. But was wondering exactly how it worked. Can i pick what I want powdercoated and leave the rest chrome or does it all have to be powdercoated. Also how does it hold up.

You can tape the part that you want not black. Most of the time you have to do that yourself, most powdercoaters just want the part and go do it. As for how is works, it's a powder sprayed on the part then it gets put in a heater type thing that chemicly bonds the powder to the rim. A lot better than paint. If I left anything out someone can fill that in.

^^^^^ most of what he said is correct it is heated after its sparyed on, but there is no chemical reaction in the process, the powder is actually charged which then bonds to the electrically grounded surfaces.

its not really as easy as taping off when you powder coat... powder coating is alot thicker then regular paint...

but you can try it ..

My buddy got his done and they said just to tape off what he wanted not done, and they look fine. Of course he taped in the very corner of the lip so that conceals a lot there. Looks perfectly fine.

When I had my wheels done on my old car. It cost me about $100 for all 4. When I did was I had my wheels bead blasted to get any of the clear coat off of them first. Then I talked to a local powdercoater and worked out a deal that when they ran the color (gunmetal) I was looking for to toss my wheels on. The process did take longer since I had to wait till they ran the color. But you dont have to pay for the set up cost for them running just your wheels only.
