Default Chroming Volk lips....

I have a slight curbing on one of my Volks. I wet sanded it down and it is smooth now, but when ya do that ya take the clear and the anodization out of the lip. The rim under the clear is really clear and silver like a mirror. This got me thinking that I want to re-finish all of my Volks.

Has anyone had their Volk lips chromed? I know it will make them a bit heavier, that does not bother me since I am not racing her and I am not gaing FI.

Anyone have any opinions on Chroming Volks? Just the rim / lips not the spokes.

Thanks

Ok, so no opinions?

Lol, so I decided to go ahead and do it... I am going to chrome the lips on my Gold SF Challenges. I'll post up some pics when they are done 2-3 weeks out...

I have a few friends who have done this. They look great and much easier to keep clean.

So how are you having this done? The SF Challenge is a two piece wheel. I could see chroming the lips on a 3 piece wheel because its a seperate piece but on a two piece wheel the lip is essentially part of the barrel and you can't partially chrome plate a barrel.

I am not sure how they do it but I trust these guys to take care of it. It is gonna cost around 150 a wheel to get them done which I think is very reasonable and I will definately take pics after it is complete.

I have to take these off hopefully tomorrow and put my stocks back on. I hope to have them pick up the wheels on Thursday or Friday... Then it will be 2-3 weeks to get them back.

Triji, if possible, can you weigh or have your guys weigh the rims before they chrome and afterwards too? I would like to see the added weight the chrome put on the rims.

Thanks

Hmmm,

Sure I'll try to get that for you... I only have a bathroom scale that I could weigh the tire and wheel both on before and after... I will also ask if they have a scale where they could weigh just the rim before and after...

Good thinking man

Update:

Took off my Challenges today and put my stockers back on... Wow what a difference the Challenges make in the overall appearance of the car... I am so glad I went with the Gold Challenges instead of the silver, it gives a much needed color contrast to the car...

One thing to make sure you remember if you ever switch your wheels is to remove the hubicentric rings... Lol I did not do that the first go around and my steering wheel was vibrating so bad that I thought the car was goin to shake apart at 80MPH...

Well it will be another 2-3 weeks till I get them back with the Chromed lip... They are going to dip the entire barrel then put the centers back on... So they will be chromed on the inside as well which I think is going to look great!...

Question.... I am pretty set on chrome chrome for the look... BUT as I was drinking last night I started about black chrome.... HMMMMM what ya think black chrome lips would look like w/ the gold challenges?

I will try to weigh one front and one real wheel and tire tonight and let ya know where they sit...

Here are pics of the ride by the way.

And the BBK I am considering.....

The Chrome ones...

Ok,

Here is the weigh in of the Volks w/ Toyo T1-R's.

I will weigh them again after I get them back to see how much weight the chrome added.

Rear: 55lbs

Front: 49lbs

I will take pics on the same scale before I re-install them.

cool.. i have a severely damaged volk (extra one) i use to try different things on.. I wet sanded it (past the clear coat), then used a metal polishing compound and a polish wheel and it came out like a mirror. No chrome, no cost.. just a little work and care.. I will be doing all 4 of my lips this way....

I actually did the same thing on one of my wheels where I hit a curb... Wet sanded it w/ 400 grit then 1000 then 2000 and it did come out like a miorror... But the water spots that have the potential to build up on the raw aluminum lip could stain if you dont get them off real soon afterwards... That is what gave me the idea to chrome them... My wifes E90 330i has chrome wheels and they are soooo easy to clean and take care of.... soap / rinse... and windex if you want a real shine take some P21S and WATCH OUT!

I cant wait till these are done!
