Default 18" - why 275/40 instead of 265/40???

can someone pls explain to me why most run 245/40 18 Front & 275/40 18 Rear instead of 265 / 40 Rear?

compared to the original 225 /45 & 245 / 45, Height wise 245 / 40 is about 3.5% smaller and 275 / 40 is almost similar.
However, 265 / 40 is about 3.8% smaller than 245 / 45

me thinking that using 245/40 & 265/40 is kinda keeping the ratio between front & rear better than the 245/40 & 275/40 combo

nothing related to handling etc just pure proportions

am i not understanding something?
Thanks

The answer is really quite simple. Go to Tirerack.com and seach on the size 265/40/18 and it will return only two choices. Search on 275/40/18 and it returns 13 choices. It's all about availability.

More availability, closest diameter to the stock 245/45 and wider for more traction

I am running PS2 265/40/18's. The last time I looked at Tire Rack and talked to Reggie at Tire Rack one of the choices was Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. The spec wasn't listed, only that it was OEM for Porsche.

The VDC gets confused then the difference in front/rear diameters (the stagger) is out of whack. Putting too small diameter tires will really only messes with the speedometer and odometer.

Yeah but it really should've had at least 275's on the rear. 265 is pretty stretched on the 10" rim. I think the choice was made 'cause to my knowledge Potenzas aren't made in 19" 275/30, so 265/35 it is.

265 will look fine on a 9.5" rim right?

I agree that the 265 looks a bit more stretched on the 10" than we are used to here in the US, but it is a more popular look in Japan. The 265 also keeps the stock stagger of the rear wheels being 20mm wider than the fronts. 245/275 will understeer more at the limits.

Yes, it will look fine. I'm running Falken Azenis RT-615s on my 18" Nismo rims in 235/40-18 and 255/40-18; the tires run wide in their tread and are actually equivalent to 245/265 in other tires. They look great on the wheels (very slightly stretched, but I much prefer thsi look to slapping on the widest tires possible and having the tire bulge out past the rim) and handle superbly.

That makes sense. It also makes me feel better about my plans to go 255/275 when i replace the stock set.
