Default racing tires for street?

Hey all, It's time to get new wheels/tires. I'd like to set myself up to be as "Track" as possible whilst getting about a years worth of tires. I'm either going to get 17 or 18 inch wheels, and I'm wondering what you think I could use for wide tires that I could drive around in the summer on the street, yet do decently at the track. I'd only expect them to last the summer, hopefully don't hydroplane in spots of rain and I'm not concerned with cost, deafening sounds etc. I just want to get as track as possible on the street. Suggestions?

Thanks.

the best track/street tire are the yokohama Advan A048, but they only get about 8,000- 10,000 miles on them. if you want some that last longer and won't hydroplane then go with the yokohama AVS sport. they'll grip well and last about 22,000-25,000 miles

TOYO RA-1's !!! not sure how long they'd last on the street, but they're a blast. They're an R-compound tire and have some tread...after 50% wear the tread is gone and won't work with rain conditions.

azenis 615, kumho mx, or hankook rs2 for the stickiest street tires.

toyo ra1 if you want a race tire to drive on the street

You guys are awesome, thanks. How long you figure the Ra1's would last? I figure 5-10,000 miles is ideal.

All of the R compound tires are going to be a bit dangerous in ANY rain fall. I have several friends who daily drive on R compound tires, mostly Kumho's and Toyo's.

My personal favorite is the the BFG KD (not KDW, just KD). Its super sticky and very close to an R compound but will last longer than an R compound. For the Z, they make a 265 and 275/35/18 for the front and a 295/35/18 for the rear.

Nissan Sport Magazine is currently testing the Nitto NT01 and that is another contender to throw into this dogfight. We'll have a more in-depth review of R-compound tires in our Spring '07 issue.

How long you reckon R's would last on the street though?

i think the falkens rt615 will fit you the best. i've had a dozen track days on them and i still have good tread left on them. it will last you a year of summer driving and a few track days easily. its not an r compound and i think it's treadwear is around 200. i haven't tried any tires that are stickier so i can't comment on them.

What kind of track are we talking about ?

I used to run Falken Azenis RT-615 as dual use street/track tires. The rear tires lasted ~8,000 miles. They are very good, but not great in the rain.

Toyo RA1 will be okay on the street. They stick very wheel in the rain when new. You will never get them up to temperature in the street though. It might be a waste of $$$ IMO.

Street tires are for the street.
Competition tires are for competition.
Competition tires on the street are dumb.

I had Toyos RA1 on my FD. They were awesome in dry weather. On the rain they sucked big time. They do wear prety quick though.

Yes, you're totally, completely right. I should go get some cheap all-seasons that will last 100,000 miles. That would be the smartest, most practical thing to do.
