stretching tires??

stretching tires??
so i went to the tire shop 2day 2 pick up a set of much needed rims (yes im a bit retarded w/ tire sizings) and i had a set of coopers put on my stock touring rims (18x8 225/45/18 and 245/45/18) and he said the tires will fit anything from a 18x8-18x9.5. can tires straetch like that and fit over the new aftermarket wheels (they are 18x8.5 fr. 18x9.5 rear)
The variety of tire widths that will fit on a wheel is amazing. Safe tire width is a different story. The range is more narrow. The question is Will the tire stay on the wheel if you hit a pot hole?
Aside from that, many members do not care. After all, a stretched tire looks cool. So do as you please.

I'd say DON'T do as you please, particularly when it comes to stretching tires. Putting too wide a tire (like a 275/40-18 on a 18 X 8.0" rim) not only stretches the sidewall, but distorts the contact patch of the tire itself. Two very bad things occur:
1) The tire has LESS traction than a smaller tire of the appropriate size.
2) A much higher possibility of bead failure (ie. your tire goes flat) since side loading of the tire exceed design specs.
So your Z stops, corners and accelerates WORSE and you pay MORE (for the larger size). I think a lot of members would care if they realized this!

wut im trying 2 say is im goin w/ half inch wider up front, and 1.5 inches wider in rear. strecthing these tires will affect the way the car drives/handles/etc.

no but really, what's the ideal width for a 18x9.5in rim? I was looking at something in the 265-275 range maybe 35 or 40 sidewall.
