Default TPS, and TP Light Questions...

Okay, I just picked up my 03 350z, and it came with 18' VOLK GT-7's with the Stoptech BBK.

On my roommates Z his TPS works fine, but he has stock rims. My TPS doesn’t read at all, even after long rides in the car. BUT my tire pressure light will come on sometimes???

I did a search and read that some rims aren’t capable of having the TPS valve stems in them. Is there a way to check these? Or to see if I even have them on my rims, I’m beginning to think I don’t have TPS anymore, But what is weird is the light will come on sometimes....

I also read that people sell these things and what not, and there is a banding system to attach them to the rims, so I will prolly end up doing that, but I really wanna know if there’s a way to tell if there even on there still, or if there on there but not working correctly

sounds like you don't have them. The flat tire symbol comes on after a certain distance/time...I have the same problem b/c I didn't switch the tps sensors w/ to the new wheels...

If you're seeing "--" in the display where the pressures would be shown after driving for a few minutes above 20mph, then no signal is being detected by the system. If after 45 minutes or so of driving you see the (!) symbol on the dash, then you definitely don't have the sensors installed.

Well, if they were installed in the standard method (via the valve stem) and you knew what to look for, you could tell that way. I don't know if GT-7s can fit the sensors in the normal mounting position. If they don't then they would have had to been mounted using bands around the wheel but that's inside so you can't see or detect them.

The dealer has a tool that they can use but they might charge you just to have them try it out to see if they sensors respond.

I have 19 inch volks on my 350z, when they installed them, they said that it doesn't fit. Shouldn't it fit regardless of what size the rims are? Now I have the TPS light on, will it go away by its self?

If they are multi-piece wheels (Volk or not) then they won't fit in the standard mounting method of the valve stem. You'd have to use the banding method.

No, there's no way to make the TPS light go off if you don't have the sensors in the wheels anymore.

this used to happen to me, when i'd drive on the highway for like 1 hour, non stop, and then i got scared so i stopped at a gas station to put some air in the tires... but when i checked them they were fine, the light turned off when i turned the car back on, and then about 30 min later... came back on.. hmmm never really noticed that it went away i haven't seen it in over 3 months

They're always "active". The process that the dealer performs registers the unique ID of each sensor to the computer and defines which sensor is on which wheel. Unless you find a shop with Consult II and the special unit, then the dealer is the only place to get it done.

Hey Dave, I'm having new tires mounted to 18" Nismos next week. I just searched and didn't find the exact answer concerning moving TPS to new wheels, but I think I've seen something before about this...when you're moving the TPS, from what I remember, it's advised to move front left TPS to FL, FR to FR, RR to RR, and RL to RL. When you do this, you don't have to recalibrate the TPS. I'm getting this done at a Goodyear shop and I believe they do have the Consult II, but if done as I said, I wouldn't need it. Is this true?

Thanks a lot!

Todd

Todd,

You are correct, if you keep the sensors on the same wheel location from old to new (FR to FR, etc.) then there is absolutely nothing you need to do for TPMS to work properly and read correctly on the display.

a buddy of mine used to work for toyota service.... not sure if this will work the same, but he said for people who had wheels that don't fit the tpms sensors, one way to get rid of the light was to just stick the tpms sensors into the spare tire.. the sensors will read normal pressure and the light shouldn't come on..... now of course this won't be functional, but if the light annoys you, then this might be an alternative to check out...

I just put on rota's on an 06 and i did not have the sensors put in, seems they fixed this from nissan, it wont give me a pressure, but it wont give me any annoying warning lights. Even after 100 miles
