but the stock tire sizes are 225/45/18 and 245/45/18,
so 40 is still fat?

Learn the meaning of tire aspect RATIO. The ratio is a %. 40 is too high an aspect ratio for a 295 18 tire. 295 is too wide for a 9.5" wide rim

hey sorry to bud in, but i have the same consern, i have nismo bronze wheels, and one of my rear tires gave out on me after having them for 6 months, hahah i love boost, thats what boost does to your car, eats your tires..
any how i had 275-40-18 on my nismo , on my rear
i was wondering as well is 285-40 going to be to wide? or to fat
or should i go 285-35??

Stick with 245/40 285/35 combo, its the same overall diameter and looks great.... Heres some pics of my setup.

Go look at the tire specs on tirerack and look for the min/max/recommended rim widths and then try to pick a tire where the profile height (which is equal to the width * ratio) = 110 in the rear and 101 in the front to prevent your speedo from reading incorrectly. Keep the stagger even if you go higher or lower to prevent issues w/ VDC.

Or if you don't want to do the work, for a 9.5" rim, I think 275/40/18 is what you should get if you want to stick to specs (w/ a 255/40/18 front).

The 9½" rim is at the lower limit of the recommended wheel size for the 285/40. The lower limit for the 295/35 is 10" so that's out.

The 285 will be squeezed onto that 9½" wheel - 275 might be a better fitting choice.
