Tread width vs tire compound, which is more important?

Default Tread width vs tire compound, which is more important?

Strictly for straight line acceleration traction. Do you think a 285/30-19 Toyo T1R would grip better than a 245/45-18 Bridgestone RE-01R?

For sure the Bridgestone tire compound is quite superior. But the 285 width puts 1.5" more width on the ground.

1st.... why are you comparing an 18 to a 19?

I think the 285 will grip alot better.

Being cheep

My stock 18x7.5-18 wheels will fith the 245/45-18, stealth look using stock wheels is a plus for running it on the street.

I have 19.9.5 GT7s that currently have 285/30-19 T1Rs that need to be replaced. They fit ok and dont rub that I can tell.

I could sell off the GT7s and pocket the cash, or use it to go faster. But with just a 245 tire in the back Im wondering if even with an R compound tire, even a drag radial, if traction would comparable to the 285 T1Rs which are not realy a super compound tire.

Ive had 285s with a medium quality tire and 265s with a high quality tire. The high quality tire was by far superior. I like high quality tires over quanitity.

The question is terribly simplest. If all you want is straightline acceleration get some cheater slicks.

On the other hand if you want overall performance than tire brand is more important than tire width. Give me 245 mm Pirelli P-Zero and I will run circles around someone running 275 mm Avon M500.

Additional "go fast" parts... smart azz I need the grip before I can do my tune which needs to be done before I take it to the track.

Ive had the MT Radials on another turbo ride and they are great at the track and street, but the treadwear is to low for a 60 mile daily highway commute. Im not looking for anything under 100-140 wear rating

I put on one of my back wheels with the 285/30-19s and used a jack to push the tire/wheel ul into the fender. Thanks to the negative camber you get as the wheel goes up the 285 width cleared with about 1/8" of room. I didnt think they would clear with quite that much space. If I roll the fender a bit I think I the 295/30-19 R888s will fit.

Jet, what sort of rear camber are you running?

I recently installed a set of Dunlops on my wife's Pathfinder (16"), & the improvement on the ride's stiffness was humongous---actually the stiffness is
totally gone! So, I was wondering, if Dunlop's got some aftermarkets for my
Zed...well, it MAY just be what I need to "soften" the ride on my beast. Then
I'll have THE perfect set of wheels: cute, powerful, reliable AND easy on the
ride! I'll keep you posted, guys.
