Chrome Wheel Trouble
I have a 2003 touring with factory wheels that were chromed. I am having problems with the chrome flaking and corroding. I think it's because I live close to salt water, but I don't know. Anyone got any ideas on getting my wheels re-chromed? Just trying to figure out what to do so my car can look good and I can take some pride in it. Thanks everyone.

I know your warranty on the wheels is void if you chrome them. There was even some notice by Nissan claiming that it was unsafe to do so. I believe there was also a few cracked rims resulting from it.
Un-chroming them??? What good would that do?
It's not the chrome that's the problem - it's the chrome plating process. A hot acid bath is not good for aluminum, that's where the damage starts.

Dave mentions heating the wheel, which is what I believe would lead to this failure. My post on a different thread:

Remember that we got new front tires on a different issue.
Obviously this is a case of an aftermarket modification compromising safety.
Does anyone know the process of applying chromium-plated metal. It must involve heating the wheel since apparently the metal can become brittle.
