TPMS and new wheel question
Im thinking of having new wheels (with new tires mounted on them) being delivered. How do i get the TPMS off the old wheels? Do the tires have to be taken off the wheel to do so? If so, i may not even bother with it which leads to my second question:
If i dont install the TPMS on my new wheels does that mean that annoying alarm is going to be going off all the time telling me my tire pressure is out of whack?
Thanks.

You know its funny, my Tpms valves were never mounted on with my new wheels, and for some reason i have never, nor do i now, had my alarm go off. No tire light on, no beep at startup...nothing. ....Weird.
You can usually find a set of tpm sensors for around $100 delivered for all four. you'll still need to take the car in to be programed to recognize the new sensors, and that usually costs about $40. I went this route because it seemed a lot easier and probably cost about the same, if not a little less.
Another thing to consider is that not all aftermarket wheels accept the tpm sensors. You can most likely contact the manufacturer to find out if they do or find someone that already has the same wheels and ask them. If the wheels aren't designed to accept the sensors you can still install them but you'll have to buy a kit to band them to the wheel. (there's a DIY regarding that on this site)
...and yes without sensors your warning light and alarm will (or at least should) come on every time you drive. I had a faulty sensor once and the light/ alarm always came on within two minutes of driving the car.

Oh wow...the alarm will get annoying quickly!
I mean the new wheels will accept the TPMS, im just wondering what the hassxle will be.
I will have the new wheels (with tires on) delivered to my door. I will use the ole car jack and put on the the new tires myself. Easy enough. Then i have to drive my car to a tire shop. Drop it off and get a ride back home. Get my cherokee and put my old Z rims and wheels in the back and take them to the tire shop. Then tell the shop guys "hey i dont know exactly what you need to do, but you see those old tires and wheels there? Take the TPMS off and put them on my new wheels".
Its a lot of trouble but i guess its what i have to do.

Ya ive driven for 3 weeks.... never any alarm or light...
Needless to say, I LUCKED OUT! Now i can go in for inspection this weekend and pass with flying colors. My Z loves me.
Still curious as to why it never came on, though, because it always worked properly in the past.
Well the shop is familiar it just sucks because its not a convenient process. I was hoping to have my wheels delivered with the tires already mounted but that is no use now that i have to remove the old tires off the rims to get the TPMS.
SO, i have to get wheels and tires separately. Then taken them to the shop (in another vehicle as you know they wont all fit in the Z!) then have them take my old tires off, get the TPMS, then install them on my new wheels. Its just a lot of work and will involve multiple trips to the shop and a lot of tire mounting fees. Its just a pain in the ***. They should make these things where you dont have to remove the freakin tire to get to the TPMS.

For example, I have a 2003 Perfomance model (and thus equipped with TPMS).
I don’t install sensors in my winter wheel/tire setup; and I never see any warning indicator on the dash, never hear any beeping, and only see “----“ in the LCD instrument when I toggle this to TPMS. And that is independent upon how far I drive the car.
Some drivers report beeping, illumination of the dash indicator, etc. Obviously it’s the year and model of the Z that results in these different results.

In fact that is why I do not swap-out my TPMS sensors to my winter wheel/tire setup. Doing so would erase any cost savings I gain using a dedicated winter wheel/tire setup.
I’m fortunate with the 2003 Performance model since it’s TPMS doesn’t beep or display a dash warning when the sensors are not installed.

That's why it's easier (and probably costs about the same) to just get a second set of TPMS
I understand your point.

EDIT: If you not swapping wheels back and forth, then this isn't a bad solution. For one thing, and if you buy NEW sensors, you don't need to worry about battery life in the old sensors.

I'm not saying this is a bad idea, but just mentioning that doing this (using two sets of sensors) requires recalibration whenever you swap your wheels, and that’s done with a specialized instrument at the dealership. Although it’s a 5 minute procedure, the dealership will likely charge for this service (hopefully their minimum charge).

Yeah, it is a PITA, but it's nice to have the TPMS in each set of wheels and functioning.
